17/02/08

Sunday, Sunday here again in tidy attire. You read the colour supplement; the TV guide. And, of course, there's nothing on. So instead, prise yourself away from the house and try...

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Opera)
Hungarian State Opera, 17.00,-22.30 17th Feb
Andrássy út 22 [map] [tickets]
Tel. 331 2550
Pest Centre, Opera (M1), 1 min

If you really love
opera, you'll get your money's worth from Wagner's never-ending meisterpiece. If you don't, you'll wish that you at least understood German. Or Hungarian subtitles. Altogether now... "In Flucht geschlagen, wähnt er zu jagen; hört nicht sein eigen Schmerzgekreisch, wenn er sich wühlt ins eig'ne Fleisch, wähnt Lust sich zu erzeigen!

Battle of the Big Bands (Concert)

MUPA 19.30, 17th Feb, 2500 ft
Komor Marcell u. 1 [map] [tickets]
Pest South, IX Millenniumi Kulturális Központ (T2) 3 min

No battle of the bands ever got any bigger than this: Amsterdam's Tetzepi take on the Flemish Flat Earth Society. If that's not double dutch, this isn't the Low fesztival.

All That Cinema (Exhibition)

Ludwig Museum, until 30th March
Komor Marcell u. 1 [map]
Pest South, IX Millenniumi Kulturális Központ (T2) 3 min

Video art in Hungary is barely 20 years old but the Ludwig museum has already amassed quite a collection. So this is a sort of 'best of' from the video vaults, mostly from the
last decade.

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (Film)

Művész, 17th Feb, 14.30, 16.00, 16.30, 19.00
Teréz körút 30 [map]
Pest, VI, Teréz körút (T4/6), 1 min

Ever tried telling a story with just one eye? "Le Scaphandre et le Papillon" (French with Hungarian subtitles) is based on the true story of Elle France editor,
Jean-Dominique Bauby, who did exactly that, following a paralysing stroke. The Guardian liked it.

Széchenyi Fürdő (Baths)

Állatkerti körút, Városliget [map]
Pest, XIV, Széchenyi Fürdő (M1), 1 min

To tell the truth, there's not a great deal going on, on Sunday. You might as well have a bath. No, really, you should - Széchenyi baths will help you forget the hangover and spending too long in the freezing plunge pool will help you forget your name. Try getting in without changing your facial expression.

Crumb (Film)

Fecske filmklub, Fecske, from 20.30 approx, free
Fecske's relaxed filmklub screens Crumb, a madcap documentary about comic artist Robert Crumb. Not necessarily an easy watch, but regardless, this is an endearing portrait of a true original.
