23/02/08

It's Saturday night, the Discovery channel is showing something dreary about JK Rowling, but there's no need to sit around watching that gubbins. So why don't you turn off the TV, go out, and do something less boring instead?

Tonight was going to be Philly Sounds at Merlin, but it's been changed at the last minute. (Bit of a problem that, you'd imagine, given the heavy promotion which has accompanied this). Ty, from London's Ninja Tune label will be trying to pacify the angry b-boys and b-girls. Word.

The ancient rhythms of Bali find their way to Budapest and not for the first time either.
In the thirties, Béla Bartók composed "From the island of Bali" in tribute. The Gamelan orchestra is made up of gongs, xylophones and a variety of percussive instruments. Tonight the music comes from a tiny village, accompanied by authentic dancers.

The Czechs are invading Kollectiva and injecting them with sugar-coated electro-body-pop dipped in chocolate that's 40% indie. Coming to you from some improbable, shiny future. My space here

There'll be Blood, I tell thee! Paul Thomas Anderson's new movie has has received fantastic reviews and is a frontrunner for this year's Best Picture award at the Oscars. Not that that means anything.

Two Dutch Photographers (Exhibition)

Ludwig Museum, until 6th April

Pest South, IX Millenniumi Kulturális Központ (T2) 3 min

The Dutch-Flemish Low festival has brought a wealth of imagination with it. Hans Van der Meer showcases lower-league football in all its banality and beauty, while Bertien van Manen gives the family photo a wider audience. From 5pm today only, you can even pin down the photographers themselves.

Jelen (Bar)

Blaha Lujza tér [map]
Pest South, XIII, Blaha Lujza tér (M2 or T4/6), 3 mins
If you want a night out without having to move on, then Jelen gives you just about everything you need. There's reasonable food (no gyros tonight!) and a dancefloor too. It's also less pretentious than a few bars I could mention... check out our review here.
