01/03/08

It's Saturday night, the Discovery channel is showing something dreary about kickboxing, but there's no need to sit around watching that rot. So why don't you turn off the TV, go out, and do something less boring instead?

Liliom utca 41 [map]
Tel. 061 456 2040

Pest, IX, Ferenc körút (M3), 3 min

What the hell are we going to write about this? Night of the unexpected, indeed! Trafo will be full of surprises tonight... so it's extremely hard to give you any idea what's going on. We're hardly mind readers, are we?

The Music of Kaurismäki (Concert)

MUPA, 1st March, 19.30, 1000 - 3500 ft
Komor Marcell utca 1 [map]
Pest, IX, Milleniumi kulturális központ (T2), 2 min

Finland's most famous film-maker is known for his excellent, varied scores, and tonight his regular collaborators (the Anssi Tikanmäki Film Orchestra) will be providing live accompaniment for Kaurismäki's silent Juha. What's more, according to MUPA'S website, this will all be finnish by 21:10, which gives you plenty of time to go elsewhere...

Nababe Bar Birthday Party (Bar/Concert)
.
Nababe, 1st March, from 9pm, free

Nababe, the 'world' music bar, is celebrating it's 2nd birthday. When I turned two, I was probably in bed by 9, but that's when it all kicks off here. Suedbahnhof and Chalaban give proceedings a Turkish-Moroccan flavour, before DJ Eisa Muhamad does his best to make it the best birthday ever.

Atonement (Film)

Palace Kossuth, 14:15, 21:45, 690 ft

Atonement failed to set the Oscars alight but this British film is really rather good. In fact, it's slightly unfortunate that the producers decided to market Atonement as a kind of new English Patient, because this great-looking adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel deserves better than that.

All That Cinema (Exhibition)

Ludwig Museum, until 30th March
Komor Marcell u. 1 [map]
Pest South, IX Millenniumi Kulturális Központ (T2) 3 min

Video art in Hungary is barely 20 years old but the Ludwig
museum has already amassed quite a collection. So this is a sort of 'best of' from the video vaults, mostly from the last decade. Laurie Anderson, Zbigniew Libera, Rónai Péter and Forgács Péter are among the artists featured.
