27/04/08

"Here's another sunday morning call; Yer hear yer head-a-banging on the door; Slip your shoes on and then out you crawl; Into a day that couldn't give you more; But what for?"

Stop moping around Noel, you big pansy! Try one of these...

Smárton Trió / Barabás Lőrinc Eklektric (Concert)

A38, 27th April, from 20:00, free
Petőfi hid [map]
Buda, XI, Petőfi híd (Budai hídfő) (T4/6), 2 min

At least two concerts for the price of none! Trumpeter Lőrinc Barabás brings his Eklektric band, playing some messed-up experimental jazz-hippy-dub-hop. But before that, Kiss Erzsi Panchan and friends sing acapella over some mean rhythms. Meanwhile, out on the roof terrace, the Smárton Trió play a summery mix of jazz, blues, rock, pop and folk. Not to mention Presszó Tangó-Libidó who support with a kind of quirky energetic chanson-ska thing.

Exactly what Sundays were made for.

Bluegrass Party

Főbe-járat, 27th April, free
Károly körút, 5 [map]
Pest Centre, VI, Deák tér (M1/2/3), 3 min
Close your eyes and think of Kentucky with house band Szuterén and guests, the Vitányi Iván Blues Band. There's also an acoustic workshop from 6pm, which you could take a chance on, if the spirit takes you.

Poetry Slam

Kőleves, from 18:00, 27th April, in Hungarian (probably)
Dob utca 26 [map]
Pest Centre, VI, Király utca (T4/6), 5 min

Dob utca,
under the ground,
while the restaurant goers swill their stone soup down,
there's a place where you can spread your rhymes around,
and people will stare as they listen to the sound,
of your voice, as nervously you recite,
the things you think give a real insight
into your life,
into your mind,
until you find
that no one seems to follow your rhymes,
so, cautiously, you sit back down,
you look around and watch another
poetry brother
stand up and walk to the front of the crowd
and he starts to talk about the things
that are in his head;
and some of them rhyme
and some of them don't
but either way,
you sit and listen
and then you clap
and you think to yourself
"Was I that crap?"

Táncház (Folk Music Club)

Trafó Bár Tangó, 27th April, 20:00, 600Ft
Liliom utca 41 [map]
Pest, IX, Ferenc körút (M3), 3 min
Tel. 061 456 2040

It's maybe a little difficult to imagine a táncház in Trafó Bár Tangó, but now that Almassy Tér has closed down, someone's got to pick up the pieces of the folk-fuelled youth. Tonight, Műhely Zenekar provide the strings.

Tattooed Tears / Ghosts of Abu Ghraib (Films)

Fecske, from 20.00, 27th April, free

Fecske's filmklub takes two snapshots of the US penal system. Nick Broomfield watches the hopes and dreams of juvenile offenders crushed under the weight of the system in Tattooed Tears (1979), while Rory Kennedy's controversial Ghosts of Abu Ghraib examines the human rights abuses that took place in the Baghdad prison in 2003. Heavy stuff.
