08/01/09

After a fairly quiet start, 2009 finally comes into its own, as Budapest wakes up and asks "Shouldn't we be doing something?" Yes, you should, you should be doing this...

Jazz Showcase (Festival)

MUPA, 8th January, 16:00, 600Ft
Komor Marcell u. 1 [map]
Pest South, IX Millenniumi Kulturális Központ (T2) 3 min

If Hungary isn't at the forefront of many musical genres, jazz is a certain exception. And here's where it starts: 3 days of new Hungarian Jazz talent, from 16:00 till 20:00.

Tickets are astonishingly good value at 600Ft a day. It's worth that just to check out the Festival Theatre alone.

Professional acts roll up at 20:00 but that costs more too: 1000Ft - 2300Ft. Tonight
synth prodigy Zsolt Kaltenecker leads a new trio with mantra guitarist Péta Lukács and drumming sensation Gergő Borlai. Tickets and details here.

Also worth checking out...

Caspian Hat Dance (Concert)
Sirály, 8th January, 21:00
Self-proclaimed "masters of the face-guitar and smack-smack-drum" claim to play "drunk wedding music" and they do: the gypsy, klezmer version, with a touch of Dutch madness. Myspace here.

Elizabeth (Film)
Örökmozgó, 8th January, 20:30
Before Cate Blanchett was Bob Dylan, she was Queen Elizabeth and a pretty convincing one too. "I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a concrete elephant." A bit more realistic than Miranda Richardson? Compare here and here. Incidentally, this is the acclaimed 1998 film, not the maligned "Golden Age".

Cimbali Band (Concert)
Pótkulcs [map], 21:00, 8th January, free
Cementing its position as the hangout for a new generation of cimbalom fans, Pótkulcs hosts Cimbaliband, who feature accordian and... wait for it... a cimbalom! Watch them here, myspace here.

Maximo-Pop Indie Party (Club)
Filter Club, 8th January, 22:00, free
The night starts off with a live set from Virgo who are largely a Placebo, Garbage and Muse covers band. After 22:30, the punkers kick it with the indie-kids and the beat-niks to DJ sets of indie, pop, 80's new wave and post-punk until they shuffle themselves to sleep.
