Remember "Ginger Television's groundbreaking Channel 4 show, TFI Friday, featuring the very talented Chris Evans?" No. I remember a git with glasses. Well, thank fuck you're in Budapest this Friday and don't have to listen to insufferable TV twits.
_________________________________________Bánkitó Festival
Bánk, 7th August, from 10am [map] [directions]
Ok, imagine this horror scenario: you're leaving Budapest before the start of the Sziget festival! Fear not, for, with a slight detour, you can take in the Bánkitó Festival, which is altogether more Hungarian and steeped in smaller festival cool. No, nothing to do with with Banksy, although the artwork might make you think otherwise. It's in a place called Bánk, pronounced 'bank'. It's not in a bank. It's by a lake.
Tonight, Zuboly headline a day of theatre, film, music, slam poetry, Gypsy dance workshops and generally arsing about by a lake.
Slightly difficult-to-navigate website here. (Kind of in English though.) Myspace here.
Maybe try...
Ajde Braco (Concert)
Kertem, Városliget [map], 20:00, free
Jazzy brassy Balkan band Ajde Braco's "pulsing rhythms and the extraordinary wind techniques bring motivation to the audience which will lead them into dancing." Powerful stuff!
Táncház
Gödör, 20:00, free
Get leaping, slapping and twirling as the reliable Bivaly Zenekar and Csürrentö supply the happening folk with some happening folk
Pál Utcai Fiúk (Concert)
Zöld Pardon [map], 20:00
The Paul Street Boys (if you like your pointless translations), are Hungaro-indie rock that's been kicking around for years. I can't decide whether it's worse when the girl sings or when the guy sings. Sample here.
