25/10/09

It's Sunday and summertime is officially over, signalling darker days and longer nights. Don't forget to turn your clocks back an hour! Hungarian composer Rezső Seress wrote the song "Gloomy Sunday" in 1933 setting music to László Jávor's poem "Szomorú vasárnap" The song is known in the USA as the "Hungarian suicide song" due to the unusual number of suicides which its listeners have supposedly undertaken. Seress himself did commit suicide in 1968. So don't listen to that but instead cheer yourself up with...

Absu (Concert)

Dürer kert 25th October, 19:30, 3,800ft, 3,200 ft in advance
Ajtósi Dürer sor 19–21 [map]
Zichy Geza utca, (Trolley 74)

A positively ear-crunching festival of shouty thrash-metal. Absu have been described by Kerrang
magazine as "Occult Metal Oddballs", which presumably means that they are a little more "off centre" than the mainstream Occult Metal scene... They come from the USA and have been around for 20 years, despite multiple line-up changes. They are joined on their European tour by Norway's Pantheon I, Razor of Occam from Australia and fellow Americans Zoroaster, all of who promise varying degrees of ear-drum demolition. Good luck!

Also worth a gander...

Unisex (Concert)
Alcatraz, 22:00, free
Pretty straightforward Euro-pop on offer here. Unisex's name might make them sound like a group of hairdressers but actually they do look and feel a bit like they should be cutting hair and enquiring about the beach in Torremolinos.

Freestyle Extravaganza (Club).
Gödör, 21:00, free
DJ Clairvo and Fábián Juli have some fun with their vinyl in the more subdued surroundings of "The Ditch" now that summer has finally forced the tables and chairs back inside.

Julie and Julia (Film)
All manner of Palace Cinemas: times here
Meryl Streep and Amy Adams take the leads in this unusual biopic of American TV chef, Julia Child and the modern blogger who wrote about her recipes. Director Nora Ephron has turned an unusual and challenging scenario in to a highly watchable film, which has been very well received by most critics. Reviews here..
