08/03/10

Have you ever heard the Santana hit "Gypsy Queen" and thought to yourself "this is probably written by a Hungarian"? You, my friend, were right! Well, half right anyway. Gábor Szabó, the famous Hungarian jazz guitarist (not to be confused with Gábor Szabó the Hungarian Footballer or Gábor Szabó the Hungarian sprint canoer) composed this famous Santana hit. Today is his birthday, and if he were still alive he would be 74. Unfortunately he passed away in 1982 from liver failure. Perhaps take it easy on the beer tonight, for your liver's sake...

Nothington (Concert)

Mappa Club, 8th March, 20:00
1095 Liliom, u. 41 [map]
Pest IX, Ferenc körút (T4/6 M3) 3 mins

It is another night of punk-rock...
Coming all the way from San Fransisco the bay-boys Nothington will be headlining the evening. If you are a fan of American-style punk you will find their songs quite catchy. If you aren't maybe scroll down a bit and find something else to do.
Representing the more domestic punk scene For My Friends, Random Chords and The Killing Screens will be opening. They will be warming up the crowd and keeping the "budapest-hard-core-pop-punk" (whatever that is...) alive!

Kozma Orsi Quartett (Concert)

Szimpla Kert [map], 20:00

A picnic of jazz, pop and rock put on by Kozma Orsi... Their newest album "Hide and Seek" is a pleasant little surprise for jazz-lovers and the Quartett are always adding something new from concert to concert. How "cutesy" do they sound?

Swing Manouche (Dancing)

Déryné Bisztró, 20:00, Free (Reservations are Required)

The group was formed in 2005, with the aim of playing the so-called "manouche swing", or "gypsy swing" style, following the musical traditions of Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of France. The Swing Manouche Project - uncloseting Django Rienhardt fans one bar at a time.

The Story Room (theatre)

Merlin, 19:30, 1500ft (Students 1200)
This is the most serious self described improv night I have ever heard of: "Have you ever wondered what a story is good for? Telling lies? Creating Myths? Reinventing ourselves? Maybe just a desperate attempt to create a fiction for ourselves so that we can be placed by others." Like all improv nights it has the potential to be utterly hilarious or un
believably awkward. Best of luck!

In todays world of technology, and the general annoyance that comes with it, where would we be in our developed world without the humble telephone? There may be some dispute about who the real inventor actually was, but it is a known fact, that on this day in 1876, Mr A.G.Bell received the first patent for this magical voice transferring device.
This was only a mere stepping stone for the next best invention to modern man as the telephone got more popular. This task was challenged head on by Hungarian engineer Tivadar Puskás who invented the first ever telephone switchboard, which was somehow also invented in 1876...

Vaczi Eszter Quartet (Concert)
7th March 19:30, Free
IF Kavézó [map]
1090. Budapest, Ráday u. 19.
Pest Center, Kálvin Tér Metro (7mins)

Since 2002, this semi-professional jazz ensemble was put together to fulfill the rising demand for Jazz music at the beginning of the century. Still going strong eight years later, Vaczi Eszter Quartet have gone from strength to strength, building a tight reputation and bringing out albums left, right, and center.

Fronted by the beautiful Vaczi Eszter herself, she "employs" a selection of jazz musicians to play the beautiful broken rythems under her Madeline Peyroux style melodies and texture.

A definite recommendation if all you want to do on a spring Sunday evening is sit in a warm, comfortable room with beer on tap, listening to something sweet and easy to listen to.

The kertész folkdance ensemble was founded in Budapest in 1972. We might say that it is as old as the Hungarian folkdance-house movement, which started out exactly in the same year. The kertész folkdance ensemble celebrates its 30th years anniversary this year!

On this day in 1937, Valentina Tereshkova was born in a small village in Western Russia. By the age of 24, she had progressed to the heady heights of assembly-line worker in a textile factory when she successfully applied to join the Soviet space programme and within two years became the first woman in space. Valentina remains the only woman ever to have flown solo in space. Clearly a lover of the high life, we feel sure that Valentina must be a regular visitor to the hot spots of Budapest's entertainment and you might just see her this evening living it up at...

Indiafest (Cultural Festival)
Merlin, 6th March, 19:00, 1500 ft
Gerlóczy utca 4. [map]
Pest,V, Deák Ferenc Tér (M1,2,3), 3 min

It's the Indian festival of Holi today and the Merlin theatre is becoming a have for all things Indian for one evening. The Indian Ambassador himself will open the evening and we are promised a tasting of traditional Indian sweets, servings of Indian food and even a spice bazaar. This will be followed by two dance performances from world-renowned performers, with both Indian classical dances and folk dances. Then the evening takes up more of a party atmosphere with a Bollywood disco until the early hours. It might not be your average Saturday night entertainment but, if you fancy something different for a change, why not give it a go?

Airborne (concert)
Dürer Kert, 20:00, 5000ft
Described as a modern version of AC/DC, this band are clearly not short of self-belief! They are clearly an Australian heavy metal band but will have to keep going for some time to reach the heights of their iconic "sound-alikes". Take a listen here.

Strangenite (concert)

Rage (Concert)
4th March, 19:00, 5000ft
Diesel Klub [map]
Pest, VI, Ferenc Körút (T4/6), 10 min

Coming all the way from the other side of Austria, these German hardcore rockers and Metallica wannabies, Rage, are touring their new 2010 album Strings to a Web from Budapest to Milan.
These burley, hairly, German rock gods have been together slaying the musical mythical dragon since the late eighties, and continue to rock endlessly alongside a full orchestra.

Manning the flanks of these destructive giants are fellow countrymen Jaded Heart who are fronting a similar fashionable 80`s hair-doo which is much associated with the classic rock world as if they were all Samson themselves.

Last but not least on the Bill are unknown American band, Seven, who have come across the pond to delve in some European culture.

Magyar Nap (Concert)

Cirkuszka (Concert)
IF Kavézó [map] 19:30
Bittessweet chanson music, starting at the world of tango and bossa nova, arriving in opened hearts and minds. Its foundation is touched by the airs of jazz, hungarian folk music, with the spirit and Hungarian sense. This versatile duo gives a performance which is familiar, lyrical, and ironical at times.

02/03/10

Football. Hungary. Hungary? Football? Debrecen are playing...oh they just lost. It wasn't always like this though. Back in the day (the 50s), Hungary claimed victory against England in what is still described as "the match of the century". The main man of this, no not Puskas, the other one-Hidegkuti Nándor was born on this day in 1922. His footballing skills and general all-round magical magyarness led him to score 3 goals in the match, beating England 6-3, and introducing the now ubiquitous 4-2-4 offense something-or-other. The Communist authorities at the time claimed Hungary's dominance for themselves, heralding their "socialist ideals in liberating the genius that lay dormant in the proletariat". Whatever. Have a drink for old Nándor tonight. Wherever your footballing allegiances lie, it was still a bloody good match.

Attention spans are on the wane, we have been told. Apparantly there is some stuff going on in Bp tonight that I was meant to tell you about....ummm...oh look-the sun has come out! Sorry, what was i saying? If you are of the generation who can't finish a whole Wikipedia article, then this event may be for you. Ignite Budapest is part of a worldwide 'movement'-type thing where speakers are given 5 minutes and 20 slides lasting 15 seconds each to talk about stuff. interesting stuff. For just long enough not to let your attention wander. The concept seems to be taking off all over the place, and may actually make watching a presentation interesting again. And did I tell you that they get 5 minutes and 20 slides to...oh. Sorry...Now what was I doing again?

Bruce Dickinson Tribute (concert)
Rockrandevú Club, 20:00 [map]
So. Do a little bit of research on Bruce Dickinson and it turns out he is amazing. In between rockin' his little 80's hair metal socks off fronting Iron Maiden, he fills his time writing novels, being a master-fencer and ferrying stranded holiday makers home in his private jet when recession-hit holiday companies can't get their customers home. This man deserves a tribute, and you can find it tonight at Rockrendevu. Bless him.

Dürer Táncház (music, dancing)
Dürer Kert, 20:00, free! [map]
Dürer leaves its usual rocky roots and holds a traditional Magyar Táncház night. If you feel sad at the lack of thigh-slapping in contemporary musical culture, this is the place to go. And it's only bloody ingyenes, so there's no excuse, really.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare

Nemzeti Szinház , 1st March, 19:30, 2500 Ft
Bajor Gizi Park 1, 1095 Budapest [map]

Three actors will attempt to work their way through all 37 plays in two hours. The play flows at neck-breaking speed, with the actors playing all the roles, male or female, young or old.
The story of Othello is brought to life by gangster rap, the histories are presented within the framework of an American Football game, and Hamlet is summarized in the space of 20 seconds.
Shakespeare, comedy, men dressed as women... Sounds like an interesting night.
Tickets in advance might be a good plan.

Born to Lose, Good Knives and Rotten Tomatoes (concert)
Dürer Kert, 20:00, 1000ft,
Hailing from Austin, Texas, Born to Lose isn't your average Texan group; their anthemic punk cuts, staggeringly catchy and aggressive guitar chops have made them self proclaimed forefather's of the American punk genre. Good Knives are in from LA and the Rotten Tomatoes represent the Budapest side of the scene.

New Model Army (concert)
A38 Hajó, 20:00, 3900ft (advanced), 4500 ft (on door)
If you aren't looking for American punk music, how about some British post-punk? Uk's New Model Army mix the force of punk together with the sounds of modern-day folk-rock. Staunch advocates of the Brit working class, anti-Thatcher political lyrics, and football-chant feel and are the recipe for singles capable of reaching the "lowerer reaches of the pop charts". Hmmm?

DJ S'Arc (club)
Lámpás, 21:00, Free
If you are looking for something a bit less angry, easier on your wallet and interested in heading into the depths of a Budapest basement one more night before spring hits then this is probably for you. Described as old cartoons and new music one wonders what you might be in store for.

It is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta's 24th birthday. Better known as Lady Gaga, she attended high school here in Budapest where she has been quoted as saying that throughout her teenage years she "used to get made fun of for being either too provocative or too eccentric" so she "started to tone it down"... Perhaps this means she put on pants? I doubt she is toning herself down any more so in honour of her, let's say, interesting fashion style, we suggest you dress up to the nines tonight. Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) has been the only astronaut working on the moon with GERTY (Kevin Spacey), his computer, for the last three years. the movie follows his reactions as his intergalactic mandate reaches its end.

This movie might be a tough sell for you folks seeing as though it was shot in 33 days on a 5 million dollar budget and most of us haven't heard of it. It has, however, been the recipient of rave reviews, and was a hit in the 2009 film festival season. "One of those rare, intelligent, thought-provoking science fiction films".

Also, it is a Sunday night and Kino makes a great Chai Latte.

Most [map]
Pest, Zichy Jenő utca (T4/6) 2mins

Tonight we are blessed with one half the the Savages y Suefo musically talented duo, Suefo. Assuming the other member got lost, or maybe is `a bit too tied` after a long week in the studio - mixing some beats in the musical metaphorical kitchen he calls his bedroom. Whatever the reason, we can also introduce Gandhava, another disk jockey who is spinning into us into an oblivion with some downtempo and erotic tunes this evening.

Suefo, who is currently colaborating with Mr. Savages, DeeJaying and producing, are currently signed to Chameleon records and bought out their debut album Five Finger Discount in 2008. Following influences from Cansei de ser sexy, The Herbaliser, Qunatic, and Air to name just a few, their sounds bring Balkan beats, tightly packed with electonica, a shave of bass, and a large pinch of
Funky Jazz.

Deeply fusing the old school traditional melodies of Hungarian folk music with this new invention of hip-hop and eminem style rapping, Maszkura actually sound pretty unique and is quite a refreshing change to indie/pop-rock bands which are in abundence around the city.
Using a wide variety of instruments and voices, the end product is deep and well organised, structured and diverse.

The other bands lined up are fairly unknown but offer other variety along the same genre, introducing special sounds and progressive instrumental jazz compositions, dance, eclectic jazz-funk-hip-hop and downtempo music. Smooth
