24/03/10

Sick and tired of living under a political and economic structure based on capitalism but not quite sure about dusting off your copy of Das Kapital just yet? There is another way! Look Eastwards towards the lovely tiny country of Bhutan (Land of the Thunder Dragon), who on this day in 2008 held their first ever democratic election. Things under monarchic rule before then didn't seem too bad, however, because the old King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, decided to replace GDP as a measure of wealth by his own system of GNH-Gross National Happiness. Trying to measure progress on spiritual and psychological terms, not just economic wealth. Not sure what happened after they welcomed democracy, mobile phones and the internet as of 2008, but still-bless old Jigme for trying...

Glenn Brown (exhibition)
Ludwig Múzeum Until April 11th, 2200ft (1+1)
Komor Marcell utca [map]
Pest, IX, Boraoas Ter, tram (4/6)

Seeing as most of the English speaking population of Bp are eeking out a living teaching a bit of English here and there, the chances of anyone having a busy schedule on a Wednesday in March is slim to none. Problem with this escapist lifestyle is that it is not the most lucrative of career paths. So, if you are still waiting for the kerts to open so you can sneak in cans of Arany Aszok to pass the days away on the cheap, one option may be to wile away an afternoon at the Glenn Brown exhibition. Turner Prize nominee in 2000 (don't you know?), there are posters slapped all over this city advertising his show at the Ludwig Museum. At the moment it is 1+1, which means one thing-BOGOF art! Famous for his oil paintings using 'appropriation' (read-plagarism), he reconstructs famous paintings of past and present in a hyper-real style. His pictures look pretty good, and it might be a way to go get some culcha on the cheap with a friend before the summertime alcoholism kicks in.

Gift of the Gab (Speech Slam)
Cotton Club [map], 19:00, 1000ft
The Grand Final of Budapest’s only English-language speech slam. Five contestants have won their way to the final in monthly competitions. Each will give a five-minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice. Judges, randomly picked from the audience, will score them. Each contestant will then give a three-minute impromptu speech on a topic chosen for them by the audience. According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy. Details here.

Lajkó Félix, kísér: Brasnyó Antal, Kerekes Band (concert)
A38, [map]. 20:00, 2900ft (in adv.) 3500ft (on door)
If you can utter the words "ethno-funk" without sicking into your mouth a little bit, this might be the night out for you. Trendy-bearded Balkan Violin virtuoso Lajkó Félix-teams up with the Kerekes band, upbeat Magyar folkyness which rocks the stage with an assortment of odd-looking wind insruments (not as bad as it sounds-check here). Should be a good night, they might even rock the boat a bit. geddit?

Firey red-haired Scotsman, Brian Higgins, is flying over in this direction for some
exceptionally funny and general madness this evening at the new and beautiful Dover Klub. The inaugural gig at the Dover Klub is obviously going to kick off to a great start as Brian Higgins is voted not only as the `peoples comedian` and also described as just like the young Billy Connelly with his daft and eccentric set.

21/03/10

It's World Poetry Day today and we literary types here at the Hub are of course partaking in UNESCO's promotion of reading, writing, teaching and publishing poetry. So, let Petofi Sandor's poem "Rise Up Magyar" infamous words ring out...
"It's the sword that one's arm betters, Yet we wear grim chains and shackles. Sabers outshine the chains and fetters, Swords, slash though the damned manacles! God of Hungarians, we swear unto Thee, We swear unto Thee - that slaves we should no longer be!"
Note: Manacles - just another word for handcuffs. If nothing else World Poetry Days has added manacles to your daily vernacular.

M.A.C.(Concert)

Szabad Az Á [map] 21:00, Free

Marci, Anthony, and Connor appear to be a regular cover band a Szabad covering RHCP, U2, Pink Floyd and whatnot. This band has been described by my personal favourite reviewer (google translate) as an action packed band who play rock music, chill-out specific riffs, powerful refrénekkel and funky grúvokkal.

Memories Garden (Concert)
Old Man's Music Pub, 20:00, Free

Memories Garden has had an bit of turnover since their formation in 1993 but they stay true to their grunge roots. A bit too much of Eddie Vedder with a little jazz mixed in.

Today is the day when Beatles legend and peace activist John Lennon tied the knot with Japanese artist and author Yoko Ono, in 1969. Lohn met Yoko at one of her exhibitions in London where he commented her art as "funny, is this a joke?" when viewing a real apple with a card above which said "APPLE". Who can blame him really, when the price tag was in excess half a million forints!?...

VinCE is a wine event, the first of its kind and the first in Central Europe. During the two day event wine professionals and wine lovers can taste the most significant wines of the region in one place. A unique feature of the tasting is that only invited wineries can exhibit and only if the wine makers’ presence is guaranteed.
Another positive character of the tasting is that only those Hungarian, Serbian, Slovekian, Georgian, Romanian etc wines can be shown to the public which have already been awarded either by Decanter Hungary or by Decanter World Wine Award. Just to add some spice, some wineries out of region are also represented by inland distributors.

A very happy Mojo Day to all followers of the Discordian religion who might be reading this. Spring Festival (Festival)
Various Locations, 19th March

Budapest experiences its annual cultural awakening, akin to the tentative stirrings of spring from the icy and unrelenting grip of winter. The horizon, for too long, seeming so far, is illuminated by a luminescent constellation of internationally renowned stars heralding the warm and sultry breath of summer.

Palace of Arts 19:45,
Komor Marcell u. 1., 8500 to 1500 Ft
Beethoven’s symphony No. 9 and Piano concerto No. 4 fronted by a troupe of international performers, is a lightening strike to commence the cultural bombardment to follow.

National Theatre
Bajor Gizi park 1, 3500 to 1200 Ft
A tragedy of narcissistic generosity: King Lear in Hungarian-a mouthful even for the most cunning linguist-throbs with the promise of an eventful evenings frolicking.

Hungarian State Opera House,
Andrássy út 22, 16900 to 1000 Ft
Bournonville: La Sylphide
Tutu, but certainly not second class, a tale of wild and dangerous women it gallops like Nijinsky to the finish. I would back this all the way.

Wisp

DonkeyKong-playing, barreling in from Niagara, overflowing with a wash of jungle, experimental drum and base, and ambient electronica. Will Wisp float your boat?

The Stoned Rolling Stones
Old Mans music club, Free
In praise of the green buds of spring, I have pre-rolled a camberwell carrot of big lips, bleary eyes and midnight trips to the all night shop.

After one further trip into space Alexey eventually rose to the rank of General and became head of the Soviet space programme. He eventually retired in 1991 and has travelled extensively since then. Random Chocolates (Concert)

Filter Club - 19:45, free
Almássy utca 1 [map]

One of the more established and entertaining ex-pat bands in Budapest play their own brand of alternative pop/rock. A full show also includes support from Mookie Brando and his Second Cousins, plus Kinkiez. The Random Chocolates have just released a new 5-track demo EP, which will no doubt make an appearance during the evening. As their name implies, the Random Chocolates also have a tendency to deliver random items of chocolate to members of the audience. So, if you don't like the music, at least there might be some consolation from the confectionery.

16/03/10

If for some reason your mind seems to be occupied with tangoing in Paris or your thoughts keep revolving around The Last Emperor, it is easily explainable. On this day, Bernardo Bertolucci, the master of Italian cinema was born. The director, who once called New York ‘The Big Nipple’ celebrates his 60th birthday today. 16th March is also the day when the last American state ratified the Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery. So, in case you are still able to summon up the energy to party on such a momentous day which happens to be the first day after the long weekend, some irresistible musical nibbles follow…

Kelly 8, Random Chords, Them Apples. (Concert)

Delírium [map]
1073 Budapest, VII. kerület, Kertész utca 33
Pest Center, Király Utca 4/6T (2mins)

Since 2002, this semi-professional jazz ensemble was put together to fulfill the rising demand for Jazz music at the beginning of the century. Still going strong eight years later, Vaczi Eszter Quartet have gone from strength to strength, building a tight reputation and bringing out albums left, right, and center.

Fronted by the beautiful Vaczi Eszter herself, she "employs" a selection of jazz musicians to play the beautiful broken rythems under her Madeline Peyroux style melodies and texture.

A definite recommendation if all you want to do on a spring Sunday evening is sit in a warm, comfortable room with beer on tap, listening to something sweet and easy to listen to.

"Hello? Sorry, I can't hear you. I'm on the...what? No, no, I said...hang on a minute, I just have to...what did you say? look just send me an sms..I said SEND ME AN...oh never mind". Celebrate 134 years of not being able to hear something important, getting annoyed by other people chatting on the train, cause on this day in 1876 Alexander Graham Bell did what he is famous for-making the first telephone call. Unfortunately the first words transmitted were not "but I really liked you, why didn't you reply to my texts?" or even "Can I order a 32cm Pepperoni?", but summoning his assistant in the next room by saying "Mr. Watson, come here, I want you". Could be the very first booty call? In any case, give your friends a 'bell' tonight and get them out for some of these little treats....

Grencso Real Time Kollektíva + Vendégek (Jazz)
Jelen, 20:00, free
Ahh, Jelen. Etno-jazz, anyone? (that’s Ethno-Jazz,for those of you new to this difficult language). Same stuff on offer as always-but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Smoky, jazzy, avantgarde, blah blah blah. You would probably hate this place if you could understand enough Hungarian to realise all the crap being spouted about Ginsberg. But you probably can’t. So enjoy!

Tutenkhamun Exhibition
VAM Design Centre [map]
Tutenkhamun was kind of the James Dean of his day. But if to preserve James’ soul in the afterlife he had his brain pulled out of his nose with a hook, his heart removed, dried out and then put back in place; his internal organs preserved and kept in gold jars, and all the rest put in one awesome gold coffin. Sadly, this was not the case. But if you want to go see someone who has, you still have a month or so left to see the treasure trove dug up in the last century. Should be impressive because there’s not much left in Egypt any more. More Details here.

Is it a bird, is it a plane? Nooo, it's Yuri Gagarin orbiting the Earth. Today’s the day when the pioneer of space travel came to the world. If he hadn't died in a training flight in 1968 his body probably wouldn't have been buried in the walls of Kremlin and he would be celebrating his 86 birthday. This means Yuri would be 25 years older than our good old friend Barbie - her first model was launched by Mattel on 9th March 1959. If you are wondering what the other possible connection between those two is, we don't know, but we definitely do realise what is worth seeing today. Alice in Wonderland (Cinema)
Various Palace Cinemas. For listings click here

Burton's films never stick to any rules and they definitely don’t adhere to the advice given by the King in Carrols' 'Alice Adventures in Wonderland': 'Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop'. What is the connection with the original, then, if there is any? A film starring Helena Bonham-Carter, Stephen Fry and of course Burton's all-time-favourite Johnny Depp can't really be anything else than yet another psychedelic vision unrivalled by anyone else (though Gilliam's 'Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus' probably holds an honourable place of a runner-up). So in case you want to see the effect of filming on a green screen all day long, you wish to discover Burton's impression on the Queen of British cuisine (or Nigella Lawson) and find out for yourself what the film, which according to Bohnam-Carter was still unfinished two weeks before the premiere, is about, head to one of the cinemas straight away.

It takes two to tango, as the saying goes, but well, it may as well take three or four in case you are just passing by with your mates on Tuesday evening and decide to pop in. Argentine tango at its best guaranteed. Not really sure what the word ‘garage’ means, though. Hopefully no Kurt Cobain impersonators involved.

New York native jazz musician Agostino DiGiorgio is currently roaming Austria where he happens to live and teach guitar lessons. Oh, and his American comrades miss him so much that they decided to post it on YouTube: ‘Agostino, Charlie and Jerry were asking about you. And Raul too.’

Well, let’s face it, this won’t be the next Hungarian Santana (not that there was ever a first one) and there are some obvious gender differences... However, Raffay Zsófi’s Latin guitar music may be something to discover, even if you still feel that Bonyai Étterem actually is at the end of the world (but they do stress on their Webpage that they AREN’T!).
