26/03/08

If this was the year 2100, today would be Good Friday and there would be a whole different range of events going on in Budapest. As it happens, all that Easter stuff is behind us, so why not enliven your life with the following instead...

Break out the frilly skirts and the castanets; it's Flamenco time. The Ballet Flamenco de Andalucia pack their suitcases and migrate east to Budapest,

Magyarpalatkai banda - Transylvanian Music Club

(Concert + Táncház)

Fonó, 26th March, 20:00, 1000Ft
Sztregova utca Kalotaszeg u.
Stalwarts of the folk scene, Magyarpalatkai Banda serve up the raw taste of Hungarian, Romanian and Gypsy dance music. And there will be dancing. Palatca, in Romanian or Palatka, in Hungarian. Either way it's a village in Transylvania which produced these musicians who look as old as the music they're playing. Refined it isn't. It's a real knees-up and a real racket.

Krzysztof Kurłowicz puts the 1956 uprising in context, with an exhibition that follows the simultaneous events that took place in Hungary and Poland in the wake of Stalin's death. If you've got half an hour to spare, check here for a bit of background.

Cheap Cinema Night (Film)

Palace Cinemas, 26th March, 800ft
If you want to see Nanny Diaries just because it's got Scarlett Johansson in it because you've watched every film that's got Scarlett Johansson in it ever since that scene in the rain in Match Point, here's a chance to risk there not being a similarly titillating scene without paying full whack. Alternatively, you might want to see it for its witty social commentary.
