03/04/08

While some head off to Stomp at Papp László Arena, you can think yourself lucky that you're not part of some school outing forced to watch people hit bins, and celebrate by heading out to one of the following instead.

Parov Stelar & Band (Concert)

A38, 3rd April, 21:00, 2500Ft advance, 3000Ft door
Petőfi hid [map]
Buda, XI, Petőfi híd (Budai hídfő) (T4/6), 2 min

Parov Stelar boils up his sometimes housey, always dance-floor friendly electronica on the jazzy, disco-funky burner tonight. Think Mr Scruff but not quite so scruffy. If you get there early you might notice that he's on twice, first as a DJ and later as an electroguru accompanied by a live band. Singas Project, who have been doing the rounds in Budapest, stop by to serve a bassy, nu-jazz starter.

Hungarian-Csángó Táncház (Folk dance)

Fono, 3rd April, 20:30
Sztregova utca

Kalotaszeg u.

Moldavians should explore their roots tonight at the Csángó táncház. But don't worry, if you're not Moldavian just try to look like you could be Hungarian or maybe Romanian, have a few drinks, enjoy the music, leap around a bit and no one will ever know.

Those Three (Film)

Toldi, 3rd April, 17:00

Bajcsy-Zsilinszky ut, 36-38 [map]
Pest, V, Arany János u(M3), 2 min

The Titanic Film Festival won't be hitting any icebergs tonight! (Groan.) And here's the proof: three soldiers losing their bearings in a barren Persian snowscape. Chilling and visually striking, Those Three won the Asian cinema award at the Locarno film festival last year. There's a damn good chance that this has English subtitles.

Matsugane Potshot Affair (Film)

Toldi, 3rd April, 21:00
Bajcsy-Zsilinszky ut, 36-38 [map]
Pest, V, Arany János u(M3), 2 min

The Titanic Film Festival is not a sinking ship! (Guffaw.) You want more proof?

Matsugane... is a black comedy about the discovery of a body in a sleepy Japanese town. A bit too dark to do well anywhere other than festivals. Apparently, it's a bit like Fargo, directed by Kaurisma
ki. There's a damn good chance this has English subtitles.

They bang the drums and a whole load of other things, whether it's congas, bongos, timbales, campana, djembes, zanzas, kalimbas, ekons, zurdos, afoxes, pandeiros or agogos. From Bogota to Budapest and just about everywhere in between, Tumba y Quema Rootsy Tribalglobal music is coming to a bookshop near you.
