Paranoid Park (Film)

Toldi, all week, 19:00, 21:00
Bajcsy-Zsilinszky ut, 36-38 [map]
Pest, V, Arany János u(M3), 2 min

Gus van Sant's latest movie (which surprisingly, is about young people), has divided users of Metacritic - John P. thinks it has 'inaudible dialogue' and 'zero plot development' while Gene B. was 'mesmerized'. Goodness gracious! Who's right? (Trailer here).

Fairmont aka Jake Fairley (Club)

Petőfi hid [map]
Buda, XI, Petőfi híd (Budai hídfő) (T4/6), 2 min

'Minimal techno, tuneful enough to get played by house DJs'. Canadian Jake Fairley has received some pretty good Pitchfork reviews and is supported tonight by familiar names (Fine Cut Bodies, Isu and Polymorphin). Could be a long show... my space here.

3.10 to Yuma (Film)

Uránia, 4th April, 20:15

The Titanic Festival is bringing the Western back! In truth, it never really went away, but that hasn't stopped a number of critics claiming that James Mangold's muscular remake revives the genre's wounded heart. As they always do, whenever somebody makes one that's half-decent.

Garden of the Magician (Exhibition)

KOGART, until 20th July

1500 HUF/adult; 750 HUF/student
Andrássy út 112

KOGART's latest exhibition is a retrospective of Gulácsy Lajos' work. He may not as well known as Rippl-Rónai or Csontváry, but Gulácsy is still one of the outstanding modern Hungarian painters. Something of a bohemian, he travelled extensively, but still decided to make up his own world.

Tosca (Opera)

Hungarian State Opera, 19:00, 4th April
Andrássy út 22 [map] [tickets]
Tel. 331 2550
Pest Centre, Opera (M1), 1 min
The eighth most performed opera in North America, Tosca is darker than La Boheme and shorter than Madame Butterfly. Puccini's story of murder, love and deceit is also unlikely to be in English, but there's a full synopsis here.

50% Depeche Mode-klub (Club)

Filter Club, 4th April, from 22:30, Free
Almássy utca 1 [map]
Pest, VII, Blaha Lujza tér (M2, T4/6), 5 min

Depeche Mode are ridiculously popular in Hungary, even at half strength. But why is tonight only 50 percent proof? Are they playing fifty percent of the songs? Has the band been split in two? He-mode? Depech? Echemo? Only Fil has the answer.
