16/04/08

Celebrate Chemikool's undisclosed birthday today. What do you mean "Who's Chemikool?" Only the only half-Jamaican, part-British, part-Hungarian rapper to be at the top of a google search for "Birthday 16th April" ! But stay off his cock whatever you do.

Hopefully, he won't approve of tonight's events, if he gets the chance to check...

The seminal Berlin band hit Budapest, with what should be a suitably noisy performance. All together now... ! 'Halber Mensch, Halber Mensch, (rattle) Geh weiter, in jede Richtung, Wir haben Wahrheiten für dich, (clank) aufgestellt, Halber Mensch, In ihren Rissen leuchten unsere Sender, (bang, clank, rattle) Zu jeder vollen, Stunde senden wir, deine Werte (rattle), Geh weiter (bang), Halber Mensch (clank clank)'

The Shining (Film)

Műcsarnok, 16th April, 18.00
Dózsa György út 37 [map]
Pest, XIV, Hősök tere (M1), 1 min

Another Budapest filmklub, another classic horror film. It's Kubrick's over-the-top Stephen King adaptation tonight, with wild-eyed Shelley Duvall getting terrorised in a deserted hotel. All horror and not much variety makes filmklubs a bit predictable - what's wrong with showing something from the Children's Film Foundation?

Lajos Csontó: Common denominator
(Photo Exhibition)

Dorottya Gallery, until 26th April
Dorottya u. 8 [map]
Pest Centre, V, Vörösmarty tér (M1), 1 min

The individual and the community: how do they relate? Lajos Csontó
asks the questions with his slightly skewed photography. Skewed by symbols, words and white lines. All pieces are on sale too, so put a few extra forints in your wallet. Exhibition details here.

Cheap Cinema Night (Film)
Palace Cinemas, 16th April, 800ft

Wondering whether the Hollywood remake of the Eye could possibly be as incomprehensible as the original? Don't want to pay full whack to find out? Well, tonight's the night. By the end, you'll still feel cheated, but at 800 forint, you'll feel a bit less cheated. (Alternatively, you could always see something good).

Dub Trio (Concert)

Corvintető, 16th April, from 21:00, 2000 ft
Corvin Áruház, Blaha Lujza tér 1-2 [map]
Pest Centre, VIII, Blaha Lujza tér (M2, T4/6), 1 min

Metal-dub fusion from New York's Dub Trio. This show could go either way... it may be like 'a group of stoners tripping out in a basement to a heavy metal band', or a tight set from a group of skilled musicians. Myspace here, allmusic here, recent (bad) concert review here.

Swan Lake (Ballet)

Hungarian State Opera, 19:00, 16th April
Andrássy út 22 [map] [tickets]
Tel. 331 2550
Pest Centre, Opera (M1), 1 min

Tchaikovsky's romantic ballet, about a man who falls in love with a swan. Is there any future in a relationship between man and bird? Well... in Budapest, the answer is yes. They've used a happy ending!
