19/04/08

It's Saturday night, the Discovery channel is showing something dreary about teenage pregnancy but there's no need to sit around watching that bunkum. So why don't you turn off the TV, go out, and do something less boring instead?

Elegant Losers (Bar/Club)

Vittula from 22:00, 19th April, free
Kertész utca 4 [map]
Pest Centre, VII, Blaha Lujza tér, (T 4,6), 4 min

The place to be if you're an elegant loser with a taste for classic rawk. There won't be enough room to swing a cat in KlubVittula's dark basement tonight, so if that's what you had in mind, find somewhere else...

Africa Party (Concerts/Club)

Gödör, 19th April, 21:00, 1200ft

Africa is the latest stop for Tilos' world party series. There's a bazaar, VJs and exhibitions, as well as West African music from Abdul Aziz, and Ethno jazz fusion from M'Baye Ndiaye. Funnily enough, I met M'Baye a while back, and he was a little worse for wear. He kept repeating 'I'm on youtube, I never lie, my band AFRO... MAGIC... ZENEKAR, check me on youtube. I played Sziget. Afro Magic Zenekar on Youtube. Youtube! I never lie.' Sure enough, he wasn't (lying)...

Cinema Fans' Night (Films)

Palace Cinemas (Lurdy, Westend, Mammut)
19th April, from 18:00 - 6:00 am, 1990ft

Despite a multitude of adverts, it's a bit difficult to know what this is all about. As far as we can tell it's cheap cinema day x 1000 - a one-night cinema pass which lets you see all the not-very-good films you might not be too bothered about watching anyway. Jumper, 10,000 BC, The Nanny Diaries... all present and correct. There's some good stuff on too. (Slightly confusing) details here.

Don Pasquale (Opera)

Hungarian State Opera, 19:00, 19th April
Andrássy út 22 [map] [tickets]
Tel. 331 2550
Pest Centre, Opera (M1), 1 min

Donizetti composed a staggering amount of operas (66!) and this comic opera is one of his last. In three acts, it tells the story of a young man's search for a wife. It's also in Italian and Hungarian, most likely, but there's a synopsis here.

European Circus Day
(Exhibition/Screenings)

Liliom utca 41 [map]
Tel. 456 2040
Pest, IX, Ferenc körút (M3), 3 min

All the thrill of running away to join the circus, without actually having to run away and join the circus. Trafó chooses to celebrate European Circus Day with a photo exhibition and several screenings of contemporary circus acts in the cafe. Details here. Ha! Only joking. Genuine details here.

LavaLava (Club)

Vespa Music Club, 19th April, from 22:00, free
Andrassy ut. 47 [map]
Pest Centre, VI, Oktogon (M1,T4/6), 3 min

Sakal and Killvert, Blond and Bass, Aless and Falcao, Tits and Clits. Apart from the last one, these could all be 80's detectives. Lavalava (whose myspace is a shade patchy) are responsible for this long night of electro and indie, in Vespa's basement.

Holdudvar (Bar/Kert)

Margitsziget, [map]

Between Buda and Pest, II, Margit hid (T4/6), 5 min

As I write this, it's midnight, the temperature's at a steady six degrees, but that hasn't stopped some optimistic kerts (outdoor bars) opening for business. Reliable, but never that exciting, Holdudvar ('Moon Courtyard') has rung the changes. There's a new indoor dancefloor, and a temporary comic art exhibition. Take a jumper!
