23/04/08

Celebrate Shakespeare William's birth-and-death-day today. What do you mean "Who's Shakespear Billy?" He's only the most famous Hungarian playwrite of all time, with classics such as: 'Romeo és Júlia', 'Hamlet, a magyar királyfi' and, of course, "the Transylvanian play."

If Bill were alive toda
y, he'd no doubt be going to one of the following...

IMPEX: The Book (Art Project)

Trafó, 23rd April, 16:00 onwards
Liliom utca 41 [map]
Pest, IX, Ferenc körút (M3), 3 min
Tel. 061 456 2040

Remember West Balkan? It used to be a thriving bar until they pulled it down in the name of redevelopment. IMPEX used to work from there. No wonder then that their latest project,
‘We are not ducks on a pond but ships at sea‘ examines chaos, order, correction and community. For the next 5 weeks, they're shacked up in Trafó, laying their foundations for a book and simultaneously exhibiting it - be part of it.

Eszter hagyatéka (Film) / Cheap Cinema Night

MOM Park, 23rd April, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00, 22:00; 800Ft
Alkotás u. 53 [map]
Buda, XII, Csörsz u.(T61), 1 min
(All films tonight at Palace Cinemas, 800Ft)

If you liked the screen version of "Embers" (A Gyertyák csonkig égnek), you may find similarities here, as producer József Sipos moves into the director's chair for a second Sándor Márai adaptation, Eszter hagyatéka (Esther's Inheritance). Last chance to see it on the big screen tonight!

But if that's not your thing, tonight's a good night
for the cinema anyway, as Palace drop their prices enough for you to take a chance on something out of the ordinary.

AltF4 (Concert)

After Music Club, 23rd April, 21:00
Nyár utca 6. [map]
Pest Centre, VII, Blaha Lujza tér (M2, T4/6), 4 min

If you want to see a guitar band tonight, in an intimate venue, you could do worse than not-the-first-band-to-be-called AltF4 (that's the combination to close all the windows, by the way). They list Tool, Manu Chao, Chilli Peppers and Queens of the Stone Age as influences: more the latter pair than the former, I would say. Check out their snazzy website here or myspace here.

Champions League: Barcelona vs Man Utd (Football)

M1 / Sky Sports 2, 23rd April, 20:45

Over to the Nou Camp for the first leg of the semi-final, in which Barça will be trying to put a brick in United's path to an all-England final. It's a clash of the Argentines, in Tevez and Messi; and a clash of the Portuguese, in Deco and Ronaldo.

"Like the final brought forward", says Tevez.
"What I want to do is to keep playing and learning", says Messi.
"We have to make and take chances", says Deco.
"I want to win", says Ronaldo.

Pure poetry...

Local Bards Night (Readings / Social gathering)

Treehugger Dan's Lounge, 23rd April, 19:30, free

Lazar u. 16 [map]
Pest Centre, VI, Opera (M1), 1 min, Oktogon (T4/6), 3 min

John Nadler reads excerpts from two recent books: A Perfect Hell and Searching for Sofia, while Gabor Gyukics supplies the poetry. Audience participation is also encouraged in the form of a quiz and speed-poetry competition. Shakespeare would have attended, had there not been an important football match on.
