13/05/08

A place we saw the lights turn low; jig-saw jazz and the get-fresh flow; pulling out jives and jamboree handouts; two turntables and a microphone; bottles and cans, just clap your hands, just clap your hands...

Balázs Elemér Group (Concert)

Nyitott Műhely, 13th May, 19:30, 1200Ft
Ráth György utca 4

For a group to be named after the drummer, the drummer's got to be pretty good. Pat Metheny, for one, thinks that Balázs Elemér is about the best there is. With some really distinctive vocals from Gábor Winand and Hajdu Klára, the jazz trickles like a mountain stream over smooth pebbles of Hungarian Folk, Renaissance and Baroque. Liquid Jazz.

Ugatha Christie (Concert)

Gödör, 13th May, from 21:00, free

Ugatha Christie? You've got to be kidding me. And this is the 20-year anniversary concert. Two fifths of the band went on to form the ludicrously titled Vidámpark, which might give you some idea of what you're in for. Support is provided by Miss Murple and Hercule Biro.

(Only kidding, it's provided by "Angelika és a guess!")

The Draughtsman's Contract
(Film)

Örökmozgó, 18:30, 13th May
Erzsébet krt. 39 [map]
Pest Centre, VII, Király utca (T4/6),3 min

"With my films, I hope to generate interest, to stimulate imagination, to wake feelings..." said Peter Greenaway in 1984, back before he'd lost the plot. The Draughtsman's Contract is like a murder mystery with no detective, combined with a "desire to open the symbolism of plants and fruits". Power, corruption, lies and... huge wigs.

Nádler István / Fluxus East (Exhibitions)

LUMÚ, until 1st June
Komor Marcell u. 1 [map]
Pest, IX, Boraros tér (T 4,6), 8 min
Tel. 555-3444

After a long spell playing with black, white and blue, Nádler István has turned back to colour in a big way and it's these recent works, with strong vertical gestures that dominate the imaginatively-titled exhibition, "...vertical..." Meanwhile, on the same ticket, you can assess the Fluxus capacity of the old eastern bloc.

Anoushka Shankar (Concert) SOLD OUT

Zeneakadémia, 13th May, 19:30,
Liszt Ferenc tér 8 [map] [info]
Pest, VI,
Király utca (T4/6), 3 min

I've seen this advertised as a "guitar concert." (That's not a guitar.) Daughter of the famed sitar player Ravi Shankar, Anoushka has followed more closely in his footsteps, than his other daughter, Norah Jones. But that's not to say that she's restricted to classical sitar. Last year's poorly titled "Breathing Under Water", combines elements of ambient, bollywood, traditional Hindustani, techno and drum and bass.
