Nacho Cerdà Shorts (Films)

LUMU, 23rd May, 18.00, 600 ft
Komor Marcell u. 1 [map] [filmklub program]
Pest, IX, Boraros tér (T 4,6), 8 min

Another night of horrible stuff at LUMU filmklub - today, the selection includes the award-winning, infamous film Aftermath, in which a young man who works in a mortuary mutilates and defiles corpses. Don't expect any light relief from the rest of the program - Genesis features a bleeding sculpture while American Gothic (by Carlos Batts) is apparently, a violent, but slightly rubbish zombie short. The three Cerdà films are wordless, unlike the filmklub's lengthy, Hungarian introduction. Get there late or take a colouring book.

Friday Funk POW! (Bar/Club)

Jelen, 23rd May, from 22.00, free
Blaha Lujza tér [map]
Pest South, XIII, Blaha Lujza tér (M2 or T4/6), 3 mins

Soul, funk, hip-hop, breaks and underground jazz - with tunes juggled by four djs (two of them from tilos), this new night in one of Budapest's better bars sounds like a pretty solid bet. Check their blog here.

Don Carlos (Opera)

Hungarian State Opera, 18:00, 23rd May
Andrássy út 22 [map] [tickets]
Tel. 331 2550
Pest Centre, Opera (M1), 1 min

Easily Verdi's longest opera... five acts... over four hours of music... in French or Italian. Wait! Come back. The inside of the opera house is very nice, there's lots of tickets left, and this is one of Verdi's most serious, beautiful works. Here's a full synopsis - print it out, take it along, and if your mind starts to wander, draw some pictures on the back.

Melancholy (Dance)

Trafo, 23rd May, 20;30
1800 ft (door), 1200 ft (student)

Liliom utca 41 [map]
Tel. 456 2040
Pest, IX, Ferenc körút (M3), 3 min

Gergye Krisztián takes inspiration 'mostly from the immaterial and spiritual dimension of life, and in this piece tries to translate the mood we call 'melancholy' into the language of dance'. Whether his interpretation of melancholy involves a four year old in a tutu remains to be seen. Full details here.

Buda, XI, Petőfi híd (Budai hídfő) (T4/6), 2 min

Hungary's finest drum and bass band celebrate the release of their new album, with help from FABULOUS AUSTRIAN BEATBOX SEXTET MIRACLE Bauchklang. Amazing! (Myspace here).
