05/11/08

Remember remember the 5th of November: gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot(ten). But, it seems that I'm the only one. So instead of the most amazing fireworks display in the world, I'll have to opt for one of these...

Omara Portuondo (Concert)

If ever a project were milked for all it was worth, it was Buena Vista Social Club. And yet, without it, the likelihood of hearing Omara Portuondo in Budapest (or any other Cuban musicians, for that matter) would have been greatly reduced. She was the only female on the project but that hardly scratches the surface of an extraordinary career. She performed with Nat King Cole in the fifties, sang in Cuba's sugar fields in the sixties, and represented Cuba at the Sopot Festival in the seventies. World tours followed in the next two decades, until Wim Wenders thrust her back into the spotlight.

Now 78 years old, her new album "Gracias" was released this year. Let's hope she plays some of the old ones too. Oh, and when they say she's the Cuban Edith Piaf, they're not kidding.
