Monday 22nd - Zappa Christmas
Gödör, 22nd December, 21:00, free"You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer."
Well, if you believe in the gospel of Frank Zappa, this is the Christmas you've been looking for. We've got Czech Zappas, we've got the Zappa Cirkusz, we've got Zappa TV. Pick up a beer and some hot rats tonight!
Frenk (Frenk Zeppa?) and efZámbó Happy Dead Band are also involved.

The Moog are Hungary's answer to The Strokes; The Ghouls are 60s-style garage rock; We Plants are happy electro plants; EZ Basic miss the point of post-punk by a poppy mile; Hangmás are obsessed with the computer keyboard... you get the general idea: a mixed bag of indie bands. Get more of a general idea here.

Old-school, no-frills Hungarian punk hits the deck tonight in the form of Kretens, Aurora and Elit Osztag. All three bands were active in the eighties when punk in Hungary meant rebellion against the communist authorities. Probably not that relevant today - though I'm sure they'd disagree - but a rare window into Hungary's past.
Aurora's new album, "Nincs Christmas" (No Christmas) should set an anarchic anti-festive tone. Destroy. More info here.

Church? Family gathering? Get out of here, satirical hip-hop is the real way to celebrate Christmas Eve. Zu Sammen rap over fairly chilled-out lollopping beats and list Roots Manuva, Cypress Hill and former Chelsea midfielder, Claude Makelele as influences.
Try them out here and you'll probably be less skeptical of the idea of Hungarian hip-hop.

Ok, so it's not often we direct you to Váci utca - just don't talk to pretty girls dressed as elves, who tell you they'll let you look in their stockings if only you'll accompany them to this secret grotto they know.
Bach, Handel, Pergolesi, Vivaldi and Schubert will give your Christmas the little holiness it was lacking. Teleki Miklós plays the organ with Horváth Mária on angelic vocal duty.

Sunday 28th - Skayah Christmas

Skayah are something of a supergroup, or at least a jam band. Dávid Lamm of Balázs Elemér Group fame teams up with Dániel Kardos who plays guitar in the acquired-taste, Ektar (click here to hurt your ears.) Tamás Heilig has played with Akkezdet Phiai, although apparently not tonight since they're over at Dürer Kert. Flórá Polnauer, meanwhile has teamed up with Lamm before, here.
So as the above might suggest, expect a mish-mash of jazz, swing, hip-hop and flamenco with a Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jewish flavour. Not really Christmas then; more like the 7th day of Hannukah.

With 20 years behind them, Kispal és a borz (Little Paul and the Badger) are Hungary's answer to... Blur? Well, perhaps not but they're certainly one of the best-known alternative bands in Hungary. With a not-entirely serious approach to songwriting they've avoided being entirely swallowed up in the mainstream too.
Tonight's concert comes in two parts: the first as a straightforward guitar band set-up; the second with strings, hammond organ, grand piano, banjo and mandolin. Full details here.

Tuesday 30th - Balkan Christmas
Balkan Beats 5 squeezes in to 2008. "Yeah, do it. Yeah!", growls Gothart's guitarist, Janko Mijaktic Klíma. The Czechs are in town to show us how they do the Balkan sound and they do it passionately with a chorus of vocals, violins, bongos and accordian.
They're joined by the reliably lively rumba and jazz-tinged gypsy music of Romano Drom. DJs Yukimura and Tagada ensure that the beat doesn't stop there.
