It's not often that one of Budapest's major contemporary art museums exhibits the work of true blue Hungarian artists. Usually it's a Hungarian-born American, or the like, but this time the ever-impressive LUMU has got the retrospective works of multi-faceted artist, Dóra Maurer.

There's something for everyone in Maurer's work. Her visual output spans paintings, photographs, graphics, collage, and video work. More info here.

Orsi Horvath – Emberi/Nem Emberi

Műveleti Terület Galéria, 30th Jan.-13th February
Mon.-Fri. 18:00-20:00, free, Opens 30th Jan., 19:00
Andrássy út 99 [map]
Pest, VI, Bajza utca (M1), 1 min

In what translates into English as Human/Not Human, Budapest based, Orsi Horvath unveils her first solo sculpture exhibition to the world at a gallery dedicated to young up and commers. Formerly working primarily with canvas and paint, Horvath's foray into untried waters marks an early departure for her, jumping into a fresh and imaginative ship. What lies within is an address to human nature that walks the lines between man and beast, sexuality and liberation; even the abhorrent. Artist website here.

The gallery is located through the front entrance to the building, through the corridor and down some steps that lead to a basement.

Thomas Ruff: A Retrospective (Exhibition)

Műcsarnok, until 15th February 2009
1200Ft.

German-born photographer, Thomas Ruff learned alongside the Bechers, yet his work explores the perimeters of digital photography, while also pushing them. From his work pixelating pornographic pictures or the Twin Towers falling, to his intensely unsettling portraiture, he's multifacited to say the least. If Ruff wasn't already considered a new staple in the world of fine art photography, then chalk this up to be his breakthrough show.
