04/03/09

Ancient Mayan folklore states that Wednesday is to be a day of sacrifice and penitence. Only once you achieve transcendence through both practices can you rejoice. We say ignore them - no wonder their civilisation's dead - head out to one of these instead...

Elvis Jackson (Concert)

A38, 4th March, 20:00, 1000Ft

Petőfi hid [map]
Buda, XI, Petőfi híd (Budai hídfő) (T4/6), 2 min
Yes, that's right! Elvis is alive! Famous for songs such as "Ain't nothin' but a smooth criminal" and "Suspiciously Bad" (see what I've done there?), Elvis Jackson is, in fact, a bunch of Slovenes.

Actually, their real songs aren't any more sensible. Punk-ska, with occasionally heavyish guitars, evening out into a kind of punk-pop soup. Supporting are the even stupider Yellow Spots, who look like the walking wounded and whose 'classics' include "Where's the toilet?" Serious music fans stay at home - cheap though!

Also worth a gander...

AltF4 (Concert)
After Music Club, 4th March, 21:00, free
If you want to see a guitar band tonight, in an intimate venue, you could do worse than not-the-first-band-to-be-called AltF4 (useful for dealing with pop-ups
). They list Tool, Manu Chao, Chilli Peppers and Queens of the Stone Age as influences: more the latter pair than the former, I would say. Check out their snazzy website here or MySpace here.

Independent Wednesday Night (Club)
Szimpla Kert, 4th March
What more info do you want about tonight's Indie night other than it's "by Kid"? Who's Kid? What is this? An Indie night for kids? Daycare at Szimpla? Probably not. More like Indie records being spun by a kid called Kid.

Hungarian-Csángó Táncház (Folk dance)
Fono, 4th March, 20:15, 1000Ft
No, not Tango, Csángó : Moldavians caught somewhere between being Hungarian and Romanian. Live music from Téka, for the Hungarian bit, and the fancily-titled Fanfara Complexa, for the Csángó bit - details here.

Slumdog Millionaire (Film)

Puskin Mozi [map], 4th March, 13:15; 15:15; 17:15; 19:30
An unlikely love story finds an Indian youngster on the popular television show, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, searching for his lost love. A completely unknown cast but 8 Oscars must count for something. Trailer here and IMDB here.
