17/03/08

Since you're very unlikely to be able to locate Osama bin Laden in his cave-lair in order to wish him a happy birthday, take pride in the fact that you're not stuck in there with him so you can check out one of these instead...

Trans Balkan Collective (Concert)
Kőleves 17th March, 21:00, 800Ft
Dob utca 26 [map]
Pest, VII, Deák Ferenc tér, 5 min

Not your traditional lithe, plucky folk band, the Trans Balkan Collective aim for a re-branding of the genre by slapping on an impressive jazz bravado to a sound that feels unique and refined. The Trans Balkan collective are relative new-comers to the Budapest music scene but are already making headway. Formed in 2007 under the auspices of creating a new breed of folk that combines both traditional elements Balkan folk with jazz's improvisational flexibility, they landed a two hour performance on TBC.

If you're looking for a fresh spin on more tried and true gypsy folk, give the Trans Balkan Collective a spin. Dinner and drinks beforehand could make the evening's musical stylings a welcome digestif! Take a listen here.

Or how about...?

Rekontra (Concert)

Pótkulcs [map], 21:00, 17th March, free
What can we say about Rekontra that we haven't said before? Nothing, so we'll say it again:
breathe more life into traditional Hungarian folk music than you might think possible. The cimbalom is king! Listen here.

Random Trip (Concert)
Instant, 21:30, 17th March, free
Barabás Lorinc makes yet another appearance on the Budapest music scene, this time joined by Turbo and Qualitons for an improv night billed as "AcousticElectroFunkDisco." Interesting blend. My curiosity has surely been piqued!

Luddikták (Concert)
Gödör, 21:00, 17th March, 1000Ft
Hungarian rap? Anomalous for sure, but don't count Ludditák out just yet. Headed by the enigmatic rhymes of MC Tita, Ludditák sport innovative tracks laced with a surprisingly impressive lyrical flow. Worth checking out for sure. Take a listen here.
