18/03/09

Ancient Mayan folklore states that Wednesday is to be a day of sacrifice and penitence. Only once you achieve transcendence through both practices can you rejoice. We say ignore them - no wonder their civilization's dead - head out to one of these instead...

Milk (Film)

Harvey Milk was gay! The first openly gay US politician, that is. Gus Van Sant's warm, evocative docu-drama captures the spirit of a man on a personal and political mission, and won two Oscars for its efforts.

Far from his days as the tokin' and jokin', fun-lovin' Spicoli, Sean Penn delivers a performance that backs up the Oscar he won for Best Actor. James Franco does a bang-up job as welll; all the while sporting a rather envious mustache. Universally rave reviews
here.

Also worth a gander...

The Last Drops (Concert)
Treehugger Dan's Lounge [map], 18th March, 19:30, 500Ft / 300 students
Not been to a '
beer-fueled 4-man alt.country/indie folk/acoustic mashup' for a while? Well, tonight might be the night... The Last Drops will be doing exactly that amidst the stacks of books at Treehugger Dan's.

Spischak Duo (Concert)
Pótkulcs [map], 18th March, 21:00, free
Spischak on bass tonight in what's sure to be a mellow jazz affair. Perfect for sipping beers at the "spare key." Here's what he sounds like alone.

JAZZGödör - Kovács Linda Quartet (Concert)
Gödör, 18th March, 21:00, free
Warm, creamy, easily digestible jazz with a hint of Cassandra Wilson or Shirley Horn (but not as deep.) Myspace here. Also on is the Váczi Eszter quartet.

Happy-Go-Lucky (Film)
Művész, 18th March, 15:15, 17:30, 19:45, 22:00
A British comedy that takes a surprisingly optimistic outlook on life. Taken straight from a reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes, "Happy-Go-Lucky isn't just a film that demonstrates the goodness of humankind, but makes you believe in it as well." The stunning reviews might get you in the mood to smile for once in Budapest!
