14/06/09

"Trudging slowly over wet sand; Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen; This is the coastal town; That they forgot to close down; Armageddon - come armageddon!, come!" Everyday is like sunday but this one in particular. (And yes, I know Budapest isn't a coastal town.)

Strawberry Festival

Szentendre Island, 14th June, all day
Tahitótfalu [map]
[Directions]

Look at the picture and say what you see. That's right! It's not really in Budapest but it's only up the road at Tahitótfalu (on Szentendre Island) and 15 to 20 thousand strawberry lovers don't think it's too far.

On top of the availability of strawberries, expect to see "
the procession of the strawberry farmers", strawberry jam by the bucket-load, market stalls, kids running around complaining that they feel ill because of all the strawberries, and a "big stage" with various acts and activities which may or may not constitute entertainment.

Go on, it's only once a year. Local website here, in English!

Besh o droM (Concert)
Zöld Pardon [map]
Catch Besh o droM under the stars in Zöld Pardon tonight. According to the band, they're not stuck in the Balkan category but that's exactly where most people would stick them. No matter how they're categorized, it's still a lot better than much of the stuff ZP stick on. Website here. Myspace here. Youtube here.

Flea Market (Flea Market)

Bolhapiac, City Park, morning only, 120Ft.
Sunday wouldn't be Sunday without rummaging through a load of rubbish, especially now that the weather is beautiful. Old nudie magazines, used underwear, written-on postcards, stolen mobile phones, hey maybe you can even pick up some pre-war cigarette butts! Be sure to get there early to get dibs on the best crap! Hub article here.

Tilos Marathon (Concert)
Dürer Kert, from 16:00, 1000Ft
The marathon's still running! Tilos Rádió, Budapest's first "non-profit" radio station, is holding its annual fundraiser concert at Dürer, where a slew of local acts will be taking to the stage. Line-up here.

Athe Sam (Concert)
Gödör, 20:00 till late
Yes, it's still on. More Gipsy sounds than you could shake a cimbalom at. Tonight, Balogh Katesz and friends show you how to dance, while Kanizsa Csillagai and Balogh Kálmán and his Gipsy Cimbalom Band give you something to dance to.
