21/07/09

It's 40 years to the day since Neil Armstrong uttered those unforgettable words: "There's nothing here, let's go home." And if you pick the wrong venue in Budapest tonight, you might find yourself saying the same...

Trafik / Sajnos Batár (Concert)

Gödör
, 21st July, 21.00, free

Trafik sound like they've listened to The Cardigans once or maybe a hundred times, and thought: we can do that. And they can; kind of. Myspace here. ( I was the 827th visitor.)

Supporting are Sajnos Batár, who are, and let's be fair to them, Hungarian rock at its most average.

But it's all free, so it's no great loss if you just end up sitting outside.

Or how about...?

Steve Lukather Band or Singas Project (Concert)
A38, 21:00, 6900Ft or 500Ft
Why are session musicians session musicians? Because if you put them together in a real band, they end up like Toto: sub-mediocre rock turds. Steve Lukather is living proof and for 6900Ft, you can see it - details here. Maybe you're better off staying on deck - it's 6400Ft cheaper, you get a free drink, and you can listen to Singas Project melting their soulful-jazzy grooves.

The Magdalene Sisters (Film)
Puskin, 16:00
"This extraordinary film is celluloid incendiarism, rabble-rousing cinema with a delirious, delicious edge of black comedy which I estimate to be about 90-95% intentional", said the Guardian, in 2003. Universal acclaim here.
Rekontra (Concert)
Pótkulcs 21:00, free
Breathing
more life into traditional Hungarian folk music than you might think possible on a Tuesday night. The cimbalom is king! Listen here.

Irie Maffia Soundsystem (Club)
Corvinteto
Well,
Barabás Lorinc and Dagadu Sena have little to do with tonight's proceedings but Columbo, Juno and Dermot are in the house, plying their DJ trade. Myspace here. If you don't fancy it, the roof's open now, so you can sit in the glorified carpark above the city until the sun comes up.
