The weekend in Budapest starts on a Thursday and ends on a Wednesday. So for the first day of the weekend, you'd better find yourself something to do...

Balaton Klub (Concert)

Gödör, 23rd July, 20.00, free

The moniker's pretty misleading. Balaton Klub isn't the awful holiday resort "slags and wankers" night you might imagine. Forming in 1979, Balaton were part of the first wave (ripple) of alternative bands in Hungary. Singer/songwriter Víg Mihály has also soundtracked several Béla Tarr films, cementing his place in the counterculture (what there is of it.)

ef. Zámbó Happy Dead Band are supporting, have by far the silliest name and make manic electronica! Lastfm here.

Take a chance on...

Harry Potter and the Jar of Jam (Film)
Puskin, 13:00, 16:00, 19:00, 21:30
The latest Harry Potter instalment sees his friends trying to open a jar of jam, hampered by the efforts of evil Alan Rickman who has stolen all the teatowels. Reviews here.

Harcsa Veronika Quartet (Concert)
Budapest Jazz Club, 21:00
Versatile vocalist, Harcsa Veronika, whose vocals grace records from Colorstar to
Eric Sumo, fires up her own jazz quartet. She doesn't know it's her I'm dreaming of... sounds kind of creepy when I say it. Website here.

Marakesh (Concert)
Kertem, Városliget [map], 20:00, free
Fey rock from Ukraine. Free album download, here, if that's what you want. You're ok with cyrillic, right? Myspace (Roman script) here.
