27/06/09

We'll go to peepshows and freak shows; We'll go to discos, casinos; We'll go where people go and let go; Oh, whatever makes her happy on a Saturday night...

Simply Red (Concert)

56-osok tere, Városliget [map]
27th June, 18:00, free
Pest, XIV, Hősök tere, (M1) 3 min

Tonight, you can fall from the stars, right into the arms of Mick Hucknall, widely celebrated as seriously annoying. He's also notably ugly and writes rubbish songs, especially since he ditched the schmaltzy love songs in favour of this.

So why are we featuring him? Well, firstly, it's free. And secondly, after looking at him for a while, everything else will seem indescribably beautiful. It's like getting out of the plunge pool and back into the warm one.

Also worth knowing about...

Gypsy Sound System (Concert)
Corvintető, 21:00
Swiss beat makers DJ Olga and Dr. Schnapps, otherwise known as Gypsy Sound System have a new record out. They've also got a pretty good handle on accentuating the dancier of parts in some of the most popular Gypsy folk songs around. Mash up some hilarious sound bits, like kittens purring with a pepped up brass section and there you have it. It works...somehow.

EuroMed (Concert)
Gödör,[map], 20:00, free
EuroMed? Arab, Jewish, African, Balkan and jazz musical elements continue to mix and mingle. Details in English here and full programme here.

Four Nights With Anna (Négy Északa Annával) Night Owls (Az Éj Gyermekei) (Films)
Örökmozgó [map], 18:30, 20:30
The Visegradi film festival brings a clutch of Czech, Slovak and Polish films with English subtitles and the way these films are titled is still completely nuts. Nothing wrong with the Polish Four Nights With Anna, but the Czech Children of the Night somehow gets a tawny twist in English. Warning: Vak Szerelmek at 16:30 doesn't have English subtitles.

Crosstalk (Festival)
Gödör, 12:00, free
The six-day festival of video art continues. The MUSAC collection lends a Spanish tinge to this international festival - details of all the films doing the rounds on the website here. If you can work out what's happening when, you're a better man than me.
