St Stephen's Day Celebrations

The Danube and
all over Budapest,
20th August 2009, all day

This really is the day when Hungary downs tools and crams in everything from the Red Bull Air Race to spectacular fireworks; military bands and majorettes, to horseback archery, pig roasts and a bread festival.

Of course, the new tradition for Hungarian holidays dictates that somewhere in the city there will be a small riot but don't let that put you off all the fun and merriment of Hungary's national day.

Also worth a gander...

Swing Manouche (Concert)

Pótkulcs [map], 22:00, free
Manouche, manouche, can you do
Jean Django? That's exactly what Swing Manouche do - video here.

Vodku / Paganza (Concert)
Zöld Pardon [map], 19:30, 300ft
Absolut Vodku: 38% Balkan, 25% Klezmer, 22% Hungarian Folk, 15% Others. More subtle than the out-and-out-riot of most Balkan good-timers, Vodku are a touch more serious and altogether more folky.
Paganza, supporting, offer up guttural gypsy folk-punk. Given the location of the venue on the river, expect the show to be accompanied by flashing lights and loud bangs...

Inglourious Basterds (Film)
All manner of Palace Cinemas: times here
It's the long-awaited return to form of Quentin Tarantino. This time, he tackles the Word War II genre in his own unique style. The impressive cast includes: Brad Pitt, Mike Myers and QT regular Samuel L Jackson. Expect plenty of gratuitous violence and superb acting. Reviews here.
