13/02/10

Celebrating a 125 year-old tradition in Budapest tonight (with just a short 62-year break) is the social highlight of any self-respecting debutante’s calendar, the Budapesti Operabál. This “miracle of the carnival season” sees the leading lights of European society get their hapsburgian freak on, hosting such greats as Monserrat Cabballe and, err, Daryl Hannah.
However, if your corset has seen better days but your dance card still isn’t full for this valentine’s eve night, get your chops around these...

Valentines Abba Party (Concert)
Corvintető, 19th December, 21:00, 600 ft
Corvin Áruház, Blaha Lujza tér 1-2 [map]
Pest Centre, VIII, Blaha Lujza tér (M2, T4/6)
, 1 min

Still feeling traumatised after witnessing your mother’s reaction to Pierce Brosnan in ‘Mamma Mia’ last year? Not quite ready to get back on the horse that is the ABBA tribute band? If you change your mind, Corvinteto could be the first in line (yeah, that’s right). Teaming up with glamour-pop band Gomes, the Sun Girls will be making dancing queens out of all of us 5 floors up for only 600ft a pop. Whatever you decide to do, just please don’t be fool enough to pay €100 to see the ABBA show at the papp lászló arena tonight. That’s all I ask of you, honey.

Take a chance on...

Massgrave Symphonies (Concert)
Bem Mozi [map],
21:30
If that latent depressive teenager inside you is screaming to get out amidst the glut of Valentin napi bulik tonight-flick your inner fringe aside, put your ‘ugh’ face on and get on down to Bem Mozi to see Massgrave Symphonies-described as “Grindcore for the masses” they should appeal to everyone’s romantic side with tunes such as ‘Sadistic Bitch’ and ‘Mission: exterminate’. Pretend not to enjoy it.

Girls Whirl On Set (Club)

Klub Vittula, [map]
‘Fúlprijsz’ drinks party, you say? ‘Girls on set’ dj-ing? Vittula offers its usual mix of underground tunes and stylized derision to celebrate its tenth birthday. Well, it has only really been six years, but you will age on average about 4 years per visit, so you should clearly enjoy it while you can. Not for the weak-lunged or innocent-natured.

Ganxsta Zolee és a Kartel (Concert)
Dürer Kert, 21:00
How many djs does it take to change a lightbulb? Loads, probably-they’re usually pretty retarded. But don’t bother asking for help tonight. They’re all busy. Playing at Durer Kert, in fact. Apparantly it’s going to be packed to the brim with teenagers, but if statutory rape isn’t on your ‘to-do’ list, you might enjoy some gems like Xenia Flex, twirling her electro-pop thang, and if you’re really lucky flirting with you through the medium of EBM. Go there only with no previous convictions.
