19/02/10

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a Soviet space station falling through the sky in bits? Yeah, it's that. The space race wasn't always this depressing, however. In the days before Russia realised they could hold their own on the international stage with merely a crap load of oil, a president who could fight bears and a few, ahem, 'silenced' journalists, they looked up to the sky with a vision. On this day in 1986 the rusty behemoth that was the USSR successfully launched the world's first consistently inhabited space station-Mir-meaning 'peace'. Staying in orbit for 15 years with various glorified electricians keeping things going, it fell to earth in pieces in 2001 when they realised there were more lucrative things to invest in, like English football teams and diamonds. At this point in time, the people of Hungary were (I guess) laughing silently at all this intergalactic posturing clutching their Rubiks cube and deciding which minimal techno night they should go to in 24 years time...

MoodCast Minimal Techno Est (DJ)
Cökxpôn19 February, 20:00, 500ft
Soroksári út 8-10 (Boraoas Ter).[MAP]
Even though Samuel Johnson described it as "the lowest form of humour", we at Hub Towers can't help but love a good pun (dinner at Marquis de Salade, anyone?). Because of this we are urging you all to go to Cökxpôn tonight. Not just because pronouncing it without the umlaut makes us snigger like schoolboys, but also, well, because it's cute. And because the pretentious hippy vibe is not quite so pretentious as many of the other "lets-pretend-this-is-a-squat-when-really-it's-a-massively-lucrative-business" -type venues in this city.
Throw into the mix the fact the VJ tonight is called Niceberg, and we think you've probably got yourself a good, chilled out, giggle-worthy Friday night sorted. Puns+Techno-who knew they made such a good couple?

Also worth a checking out...

Palotai & Ludmilla (DJ)
Kuplung, 500 Ft

Breakbeat. Music with a beat. But not just any old beat. Broken beats. Music with a beat, but, like, a different beat to other beats you have heard before. Because the old type of beats are like, so, well, old. New beats are better. New beats are, like, you know, new. Head to Kuplung tonight for a variety of beats-mostly new, but kind of just the same beats mixed in a new way. Revolutionary.

Borbély Mihály Balkán Jazz Project (Concert)
Budapest Jazz Club 20:30, 1200 Ft

Enough with the trendy techno nights already! I am grown up enough to gosee proper music dammit! I don't want beats-new or otherwise! Ahh, well then Bp Jazz club is the place for you tonight. Borbély Mihály, (fab sax-playing Hungarian jazz visionary) is tonight mixing up all kinds of Eastern European styles with his new incarnation The Balkans Jazz Project. Free Jam session afterwards if you still want more.

Eugenia (Concert)
Siraly, 21:00, Free

Somewhere in between all of the above, more alternative Balkanness can be found at Siraly tonight. Drink all the tiny coffees your little po-mo self can handle, finish that poem you've been working on, put your damn moleskin away and go downstairs to see some of the European culture you came here for in the first place.
