20/02/10

There are some moments in history which tear down barriers of race, religion, politics, crystallizing the collective conscious with events that resonate in everyone's memory for generations. 20th February 1974 was one of those days. I'm sure families will gather and talk of where they were and what they were doing at the moment they heard the news that Cher had filed for divorce from Sonny Bono. Memorial services will be held all over Hungary today to remember that moment when the course of pop history was changed forever. The BKV have released a statement to say that all Kontrollers are obliged to sing "I got you, babe" to anyone who asks, so get yourselves down to the metro and start hassling them. When that stops being funny/you get arrested, maybe check out some of these...

Bob Pike acoustic set (concert)
Manga Cowboy, 21h, 500ft
Ráday utca 33, [map]
Pest Centre, IX, Metro-Kalvin Ter, T4/6-Mester Utca)
, 3 mins

Enjoy a bit of a cultural melting pot of an evening out as much as the next man? Well, it is 2010 after all. Head down to Manga Cowboy tonight to try and figure out what the hell a manga cowboy is. American singer-songwriter Bob Pike is playing, and although he is neither a cartoon nor will be wearing chaps, he will be around to stir the pot of musical genres with his acoustic set. It promises to get your feet a'tappin and bring a tear to your eye, but hopefully in a good way. The Hub takes no responsibility for anyone who develops a nervous tick or can't stop crying after said show. Oh, and the burgers are pretty good there, too. Worth the trek down Ráday .

Or, there's always more, like....

Performance Pub (theatre/drinking)
Artus Contemporary Arts Studio [map], 20h
We all make fools out of ourselves after a few beers sometimes, but tonight at Artus they are taking this idea and running with it. Take the free bus from Erzsébet tér at 7pm then sit back, have a beer or three while visuals, music and theatre "interrupts" your evening. Possibly "art" (with inverted commas) presented in a new and exciting way, possibly just a load of exhibitionists given free reign to make it all about themselves. Maybe go and find out for yourself. I can't bloody tell you everything...

Mitsoura (concert)
Marczibányi Téri Művelődési Központ, 20h [map]
No matter how long you have ben here in Bp, you probably know they have a rich gypsy musical heritage. Thing is, the good stuff can be pretty hard to find, so instead of ending up in an overpriced restaurant with some bad goulasch and even worse service just to try and get some 'culture', the only place to be tonight is at marczibányi téri művelődési központ, to see Mitsoura. Mixing the Carpathian gypsy musical tradition with different electronic, ethnic and multimedia styles, they are one of the few groups actually moving this genre on, not just keeping it going for the tourists. go go go.
