9/2/08

It's Saturday night, the Discovery channel is showing something dreary about alligators, but there's no need to sit around watching that rubbish. So why don't you turn off the TV, go out, and do something less boring instead?

Joan of Arc (Film)

Örökmozgó, 18.30, 9th Feb
Erzsébet krt. 39 [map]
Pest Centre, VII, Király utca (T4/6), 3 min

Carl Theodor Dreyer's silent version of Joan of Arc is brilliant and shattering, regarded by many as one of the greatest films ever made. It has Hungarian inserts but maybe that isn't too important; there aren't that many opportunities to catch it on the big screen.

Carnaval do Brasil (Club)

Merlin, from 22.00, 9th Feb, 1000 ft
Gerlóczy u.4 [map]
Pest Centre, V, Deak tér (M 1,2,3), 4 min

For one night only, Brazil is coming to Hungary which has to be good news, given that it takes quite a long time for Hungarians to go to Brazil. Merlin hosts the slightly-out-of-date but pretty lively RItmo 2003 Batucada Band and naturally, expect capoeira and samba.

Mangalica Fesztivál (Hairy Pig Festival)

Városliget
9th Feb, 09.00 - 18.30; 10th Feb, 09.00 - 16.30, free
Városliget [map]
Pest, XIV, Hősök tere (M1), 5 min

Yes, you heard me right. Get there at 9 on the dot for a sausage-stuffing competition! What? Yes. And what about the "last living bagpipe showman" at 11.30? A bold claim. Then people talk about hairy pigs and listen to folk music, while the hairy pigs talk about whether blondes have more fun. Only in Budapest!

Mahler - Symphony no. 8 (Concert)

MUPA, 9th Feb, 19.30
Komor Marcell u. 1 [map] [tickets]
Pest, IX, Boraros tér (T 4,6), 8 min

Mahler's 8th Symphony is his self-confessed masterpiece, although some regard it as "one symphony too far". Zoltán Kocsis guides the National Philharmonic Orchestra through 80 minutes of cantata, orchestral song, opera, passion and sacred oratorio. In other words: big, big sound.
