08/04/08

Celebrate Julian Lennon's 45th birthday this Tuesday and do it in style! What do you mean "Who's Julian Lennon?" Only the most popular half-Hungarian, half-British singer who's never quite been able to step out of his father's shadow! Undoubtedly, he will approve of tonight's events, if he gets the chance to check.

Sigur Rós: Heima
(Film)

Uránia, 8th April, 20:00

Cold, ravishing, remote... that's why Mum's gone to Iceland. Sigur Ros' concert film captures a tour of their homeland, the band's ethereal music perfectly suited to the breathtaking images. It's also a damn sight better than watching aging, self-satisfied, middle-of-the-road rockers, prancing about in 3-D.

Gogol Bordello (Concert)

Petőfi Csarnok, Városliget,
8th April, 5900 ft

Pest, XIV, Széchenyi Fürdő, (M1) 5 min

Gogol Bordello just can't stay away, which is no bad thing given their excellent live show. Expect lots of bouncing up and down, an encore that lasts nearly as long as the main set, and a silly performance from moustachioed frontman Eugene Hutz. Myspace here.

Tiszavirág (Concert)

Sirály, from 20:00, 8th April

Király utca 50 [map]
Pest Centre, VI, Király utca (T4/6), 5 min

Jazz in Sirály's cellar, as Tiszavirág (the Tisza Flower), celebrate band member Geröly Tamás' birthday.

By the way...did you know that the Tisza Flower was also the name of an obscure 1939 Hungarian movie?
Probably not... it's a particularly useless factoid, one you won't be able to do anything with now that we've told you...

Krzysztof Kurłowicz puts the 1956 uprising in context, with an exhibition that follows the simultaneous events that took place in Hungary and Poland in the wake of Stalin's death. If you've got half an hour to spare, check here for a bit of background.

Champions League: Liverpool vs. Arsenal (Football)

Viasat 3 / Sky Sports 2, 8th April, 20:45

Will Arsene Wenger be crouching on the touchline like a nervous rabbit tonight? Going in to the tie 1-1, Liverpool have the advantage, but Arsenal looked by far the stronger team last week.
With the Premier League tie on Saturday also finishing 1-1, the smart money might be on extra time and penalties... and
Liverpool have never lost a penalty shoot-out in a European competition.

Romano Drom Klub (Concert)

Gödör, 8th April, 21.00, free

Lively gypsy music flavoured with a little rumba and jazz.
Romano Drom, meaning ‘Gypsy Road’ in Romani, has been the modern face of Oláh music for the last twenty years and the road still has some way to go.
