10/04/08

The weekend in Budapest starts on a Thursday and ends on a Wednesday. So for the first day of the weekend, you'd better find yourself something to do.

Barabás Lőrinc and Friends (Concert)

Vespa Music Club, 10th April, 21:00, 800 Ft
Andrassy ut. 47 [map]
Pest Centre, VI, Oktogon (M1,T4/6), 3 min

Trumpeter Lőrinc Barabás brings some friends who may or may not be part of his Eklektric band, playing some messed-up experimental jazz-hippy-dub-hop. There are also some Mustbeat Allstars in the building, who'll be dropping their party beats into your ears until you fall off the floor.

Zdob si Zdub, Let3, Zuboly (Concert)

A38, 10th April, 21:00
2000 HUF advance; 2500HUF on the door
Petőfi hid [map]
Buda, XI, Petőfi híd (Budai hídfő) (T4/6), 2 min
It's a night of multicultural weirdness tonight on the ship. 'Zdob si Zdub' are from Moldavia, and appropriately sing in Romanian and Russian, along a brassy-Chilli-Pepper Balkan funk groove. 'Let 3', on the other hand, are likely to take their clothes off at some point, while the erstwhile Zuboly's bagpipes and beat-box combination will tickle your ears as they're rarely tickled.

Half Nelson (Film)

Toldi, 10th April, 17:00
Bajcsy-Zsilinszky ut, 36-38 [map]
Pest, V, Arany János u(M3), 2 min

"Teacher by day, well-liked by his students. By night, however, he trolls bars, getting drunk." Sound familiar to anyone?
Potentially schmalzy, Half Nelson half gets away with it.

Jamie Howell (Concert)

Treehugger Dan's Lounge, 10th April, 19:00, free
Lazar u. 16 [map]
Pest Centre, VI, Opera (M1), 1 min, Oktogon (T4/6), 3 min

Jamie Howell has lent his guitar to many a project over the years, in various combinations of trip-hop, pop, rock, jazz and funk. In Budapest, he's best known for his part in Tea Thieves in the early 2000s. He's back for one show only, and may well revisit some old favourites.

Natural Born Thrillers (Club)

Vittula from 22:00, 10th April, free
Kertész utca 4 [map]
Pest Centre, VII, Blaha Lujza tér, (T 4,6), 4 min

You've got ten fingers, why not put them in ten pies? Well, DJ Daniel Danyi has his fingers in three. When he's not contributing to "the best Budapest has to offer(!)" or combining the news with poetry, he's bringing indie back at Vittula with his aptly-named compadre, Sorin 'Brit' Pop.
