12/04/08

It's Saturday night, the Discovery channel is showing something dreary about cats but there's no need to sit around watching that tommyrot. So why don't you turn off the TV, go out, and do something less boring instead?

Hexstatic/The Herbaliser (Concert)

Szépilona Remíz, 12th April, 21:00,
2000 (adv), 2500 ft (door)
Budakeszi út 9–11. [map]
Buda, II, Szilágyi E fasor, Bus 2

Ninja Tune stalwarts Hexstatic and the Herbaliser hit Budapest, in confusing circumstances. Hexstatic were originally slated to support Bonobo tonight at Vajdahunyad Castle - that's not happening, so now they're at Szépilona Remíz with the Herbaliser. But where the hell is it? I've had a look at the map, and it's ten minutes on the bus from Moskva tér... hopefully they won't end up playing to this kind of crowd. My space here and here.

Shotgun Stories (Film)

Uránia, 12th April, 20:30

Low-budget American Indie, currently doing the rounds on the festival circuit. Produced by David Gordon Green, this story of a feud between two half brothers has been well received so far. And, the director's in town tonight, if you want to pay him some compliments/give him some advice.

XXVII. Országos Táncháztalálkozó
és Kirakodóvásár (Festival)

Papp László Budapest Sportaréna
12th April, 10 am - 10 pm 1,300 ft
Stefánia út 2 [map] Pest, XIV, Stadionok (M2)

The two-and-a-half day folk dancing extravaganza is back! Documentaries, stalls selling traditional clothes and CDs, not to mention some slightly mumsy folk dancers, doing their thing in an arena setting. At first, you'll feel like you're in the wrong place, but give it time. In the kocsma at the back, music springs out of nowhere. One minute, nothing, and the next minute, you'll find that quite a few people have their violins with them. (And some of them are the best folk musicians in the country.) Details here.

XXVII.
Országos... etc.
Afterparty (Táncház)

Petőfi Csarnok, Városliget,
12th A
pril, 10pm - 5am, 800 ft
Pest, XIV, Széchenyi Fürdő, (M1) 5 min

This afterparty for the folk dancing festival used to take place in Buda, and was overcrowded to the point that nobody actually had room to folk dance. Petőfi Csarnok this year, so no dramas... you can arm-slap, thigh-slap, ankle-slap and spin around until your heart is content.

The Swallows Have Arrived
(Film)

Uránia, 12th April, 16:00

17 degrees! - not only have the swallows arrived, they've unpacked their suitcases and put their shorts on. Not that this has anything to do with this particular film - it's a sensitive portrait of drug addiction from Russian director Aszlan Galaszov.

Pest, IX, Ferenc körút (M3), 3 min

Demon Superior, Panic Radio, Dictator, Hussar, Hangmas and the Super Mario Brothers. What imaginitively named characters! Enjoy indie/pop/electro/rock sounds in a very-Budapest lamp-lit basement until the sun comes up, which you won't see because you'll be in a basement.
