01/05/08

Due to unforseen circumstances, the recital at the National Piping Centre on Thursday 1st May by John Wilson and Allan MacDonald has been cancelled. Never mind, I don't even know where the National Piping Centre is!

Try one of these instead...

Hooray for 1st May (Concert)

Sirály, 21:00, 1st May
Király utca 50 [map]
Pest Centre, VI, Király utca (T4/6), 5 min
Sirály's day of events actually starts a lot earlier, at 14:00, and if you want to decipher the Hungarian programme, feel free. But the music in the basement starts at 9pm, including gypsy, world, swing and jazz collective, Etnorom followed by socio-political chill rappers, Zu Sammen Big Band (who really are not a big band). House DJs take the night shift.

McCoy Tyner Trio and Joe Lovano (Jazz Concert)

MUPA, 1st May, 19:30, 3400 - 7900Ft

Pest South, IX Millenniumi Kulturális Központ (T2) 3 min
Legendary jazz pianist, McCoy Tyner brings his trio to Budapest. After rising to fame with the John Coltrane quartet, he went on to become an influential artist in his own right: hard bop, post-bop or Afro-Cuban jazz, he's your pianist. Meanwhile, post-bop saxophonist, Joe Lovano is no small fry either, and has recently played with the McCoy Tyner quartet. I guess they must have kicked him out.

Hello Cabaret (Club)

Pest Centre, V, Deak tér (M 1,2,3), 4 min

Hello. Agaskodo Teliverek (Rearing Stallions) is a band that sounds like a bunch of merry DJs: somewhere between weird, wonderful and neep-neep-annoying, depending on the amount of Unicum Next you've snorted. Demon Superior, on the other hand are a couple of merry DJs who are sleeping in their tin-can, high above the world. Meanwhile, EZ Basic miss the point of post-punk by a poppy mile and various DJs soundtrack the bits before, after and in between. A pick 'n' mix of an evening. Hello.

DJ Feadz & Kavinsky (Club)

A38, 1st May, 3500Ft
Petőfi hid [map]
Buda, XI, Petőfi híd (Budai hídfő) (T4/6), 2 min

"Let's sink the boat!" decries the flyer. French DJ Feadz has had the pleasure of contributing to the Mr Oizo album and likewise is on ultra-hip label Ed Banger, home of dancefloor electro darlings Uffie and Justice. Also from Paris, Kavinsky sounds like he's trapped in a nineteen eighties phantom zone with Night Rider, police sirens and Tron.

Buda, II, Petőfi híd (Budai hídfő) (B86), 2 min

One of Buda's few true contenders, Fecske Terasz is up on the roof, overlooking the outdoor Császár-Komjádi swimming pool, which also opens today. During the day, it has a relaxed beach-like atmosphere and by night, well, it has a relaxed, beach-like atmosphere. Apparently there's an opening party tonight but there are no details anywhere.
