Prince William will be viewing the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue base in Merthyr Tydfil today. I bet he wishes he was in Budapest.

Syntax (Concert)

Sirály, 21:00, 8th May
Király utca 50 [map]
Pest Centre, VI, Király utca (T4/6), 5 min
"Move the moving movie with moveable movements" say Syntax. Hooray, we like silly people! It's jazz, no one's going to dispute that, with cinematic sensibilities and forays into Hungarian folk. Suck it and see here.

Pálinka Fesztival

Városháza Park
8th-11th May, 20:00-23:00 (Fri & Sat till 02:00)
1400Ft including tasting glass and 500Ft voucher

Városháza Park, Déak tér

Confusing pálinka with schnapps, is like confusing Bollingers with Asti Spumante. You might be inclined to hold your own pálinka festival in one of the nearby bars but moving from stall to stall, choosing the ones with the strangest names or with unidentifiable floating fruit does have a charm that it's hard to find elsewhere. Plus, there's live folk music: tonight, Bivály Zenekar (Panyola) from 18:00(!) and Szájról Szájra from 20:00. (Take your own glass for a better deal.)

Psychic TV (Concert)

A38, 8th May, 3000Ft door, 2500Ft advance
Petőfi hid [map]
Buda, XI, Petőfi híd (Budai hídfő) (T4/6), 2 min

"If you know how to rock, you don't have to shock." Psychic TV, the remnants of Throbbing Gristle, are unlikely to agree with Marc Bolan on that one. 'Pandrogenous' singer and bassist, P-Orridge, has breast implants. S/he's a wo/man. With a world record for the number of albums released in quick succession (14 in 18 months) and also coining the phrase "Acid House", s/he qualifies as both legend and fruitloop.

My Name Is Joe (Film)

Örökmozgó, 18:30, 8th May
Erzsébet krt. 39 [map]
Pest Centre, VII, Király utca (T4/6),3 min

My name is Joe! And I am funky! (Come on, you all thought it.) Peter Mullan won 'best actor' at Cannes for his part in the age-old tale of "likeable Glaswegian rehabilitated alcoholic meets heroin addict and accidentally gets caught up with the mob." Go and see it, if you get the chance; "some of us don't have a fucking choice!"

Gödör Táncház (Folk dance)

Gödör, 8th May, from 20:00, free

If your image of a táncház is old fogies in a stuffy community centre, Gödör may surprise you. The clientele is the same as you might find in any other bar or club. Sure, there may be more leaping and slapping and twirling around but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Bivaly Zenekar, Csürrentö and Romano Drom supply the happening folk with some happening folk.
