20/05/08

We'd like to apologise on behalf of the events for Tuesday - they should have been posted last Thursday, but instead, they've rocked up at the last minute, hair all over the place, stinking of fags and booze, wearing a rakish grin. (Tuck your shirt in, events. You look ridiculous.)

Bilal (Concert)

A38, 20th May, 21:00
2500Ft adv, 3000 door
Petőfi hid [map]
Buda, XI, Petőfi híd (Budai hídfő) (T4/6), 2 min

Nu-soul. New soul. Nuw-sole. Knew Soul. However you fancy spelling it, it's fairly clear that Niew sole artists from Philadelphia quite like Hungary. This is something of a coda to March's Philly Sounds gig at Merlin... but the question on everybody's lips is... has Bilal got enough nyoo sowl to sustain a concert by himself? Or will it be a mix? Something awld, something knyew...

ök kiállítása 2008 (Exhibition)

Magyar Képzőművészeti Egyetem
Until 20th June, from 8am till 6pm

Andrássy út 69-71 [map]
Pest, VI, Nyugati pu (T 4,6, M3), 5 min

Graduation! The first steps out into a fierce, uncaring world. (Unless you're staying on to do a masters). The Graduates' exhibition at the Fine Arts Academy on Andrassy runs for a month, and is naturally, the best place in town to catch the Hungarian artists of tomorrow, today.

Angel (Film)

Szindbád 20:30, 20th May
Szent István krt. 16 [map]
Pest Centre, XIII, Jaszai Mari ter (T4/6), 3 min

Francois Ozon's first English language feature is also his first rags-to-riches story. It may have received middling reviews, but Ozon is usually worth watching. And! Apparently, the snow scenes were filmed in real snow. The cameras got very cold. Which was good news for the actors because they could go inside and warm up while the film-makers sorted everything out! Amazing.

Rekontra (Concert)

Pótkulcs, from 21:0
0, 20th May, free
Csengery u. 65/b [map]
Pest, VI, Nyugati pu (T 4,6, M3), 5 min

As ever, hard-to-find
Pótkulcs hosts Rekontra, who appear to be the same band as Berkó Együttes, who usually play Pótkulcs on a Tuesday. Whatever the name, they still breathe more life into traditional folk music than you might think possible.
