21/05/08

Celebrate Fats Waller's 104th birthday today. What do you mean "Who's Fats Waller?" Only the fattest jazz pianist that ever wrote "Ain't misbehavin'", along with the lesser known, "Baby, what you doin' in Buda?"

If Fats were alive and in Buda today he'd probably head over to Pest.

Hungarian rough-and-ready indie-rock at Trafó tonight with Che Transz, who thankfully don't sound too much like the fairly mediocre influences they list on their myspace page. Support from Mindless 5.1 who are quite difficult to assess with the lack of music on theirs.

Although there's no Daniel 'Harry Potter' Radcliffe to wave his magic wand, you may find that you're breaking a sweat by the interval. Society, science, religion and morality get all tangled up in Peter Shaffer's dramatic piece. Full review in our Culture section.

Champions League Final (Football)
Manchester United vs Chelsea
Any bar with a TV
21st May, kick-off: 20:45 CET
Well, the pitch may not look too green but expect a cracker as Chelsea go looking for revenge in Moscow, and Manchester United chase a second Champions' League trophy. Giggs is on the verge of a goal-scoring record, Scholes has been granted a starting place, while Terry and Drogba have been declared fit, following injuries. No one wants to see United do a double, surely.

In Vivo [Latin: within the living.] Piars Tomasz captures the "natural, frozen images of organic processes." (He paints rich colourful close-ups of plants and fruit.) Gilly Tamás, on the other hand, is a sculptor. (Some of them look like guttering.)

Cheap Cinema Night (Film)

Palace Cinemas, 21st May, 800ft

If you've been dying to see The Superhero Movie but can't bring yourself to pay full price, because you've heard that it's a "mindless grab bag of slightly used gags", here's the excuse you've been waiting for. Alternatively, you could always opt for something half-decent instead. (English cinema listings here).
